High & Mighty: Chicago's Best Rooftop Bars
Updated: September 02, 2009
In its most basic form, a roof exists merely to protect whatever lies underneath it. But add some cushy couches, stunning city views and plenty of fun cocktails and--presto!--a chic rooftop bar is born. And that's just the beginning. From roaring fire pits and flat-screen TVs to lush tropical plants and gourmet eats, these bars and lounges take the rooftop concept to new heights. The sky, it seems, really is the limit. What this 29th-floor indoor/outdoor rooftop lacks in size it more than makes up for in aerial views of the skyline and sophisticated clientele, a mix of post-work Streeterville locals and stylish tourists. Make new friends at the communal table over yellowtail tacos and specialty cocktails (the Flower with St. Germaine liqueur is a winner) or opt for a more intimate evening inside on the cushy leather banquette.

This Bucktown restaurant takes the outdoors very seriously with its garden patio and floor-to-ceiling retractable windows in the dining room. But it's the open-year-round rooftop deck with its canopied cabanas and ultra-cool South Beach vibe that packs them in. The global American cuisine, including housemade sausages and refreshing seasonal cocktails don't hurt either.

There's nothing fancy about this River North bar, from its American-style bar food (wings, burgers, pizza) to its pared-down decor. But who cares about fancy trappings when there's a 5,000-square-foot outdoor area including a rooftop deck? Obviously not the swarm of after-work partiers who pack the place when warm weather hits.

At first glance the first-floor dining room, slick bar and patio beer garden may seem like the preferred hangout spots, but insiders know to head to the third-floor rooftop deck with its cabanas and cozy nooks. Pair the panoramic downtown views with creative twists on American cuisine and sparkling cocktails, and everyone's a winner at this trendy West Loop sports bar co-owned by White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams.

The name may be basic enough, but that's the only thing that is at this gorgeous 7,000-square-foot outdoor/indoor lounge on the 27th floor of the Wit Hotel in the Loop. Relax on double-side settees or grab a spot at communal tables (some with built-in fire pits) as you take in the downtown scenery, nosh on Italian small plates and sip creative cocktails like the hibiscus margarita. For the most dramatic views of Millennium Park, opt for a spot at the eight-top table that sits on an extension protruding 12 feet from the building's edge.

Looking for a tranquil oasis after a day of shopping the Mag Mile? Head to the nearby Conrad Hotel's seventh-floor terrace for some outdoor exposure. Oversized umbrellas, yellow and blue chairs and daybeds plus plenty of greenery lend an escapist vibe. Up the feel-good quotient with fruit-based cocktails and global small plates like the spicy Sichuan pepper calamari. On Sunday evenings at sunset, screenings of Chicago-themed movies bring you back home.

Disoriented? Eyes playing tricks on you? You must be on the 26th floor at this penthouse bar in River North. Dazzling options, such as the 1,000-square-foot outdoor patio, exotic Asian dishes, wrap-around glass windows and roving cocktail carts will do that to a person. Our favorite remedy: one of the flavorful cocktails, like a Singapore Sling or mojito. And if those don't bring a smile to your face, perhaps the plush leather couches, cat suit-clad servers and retro flicks playing in the indoor bar area will.

With the carpet of live grass, lush plant-filled trellises, futon-type lounges and mod fireplace there's a lot going on at this 2,300-square-foot outdoor lounge in River North. Settle in at the bar over seasonal cocktails like the blackberry mojito and flavorful small plates, or snag a table. Either way, get there early to beat the after-work crowds.
