When the temperature rises, getting yourself to the nearest ice cream shop for a cool treat might be just what you need. Cold, creamy ice cream is our top pick for the perfect summer sugar fix and there are plenty of options. Here's our list of a few of the best sources for frozen treats in Chicago. It may not be new, but patrons still stand in line waiting for their customizable ice cream creation at this Wicker Park hotspot. Add in your own flavor extracts like almond and watch as the ice cream experts behind the counter get to work on your one-of-a-kind summer treat.
Lines around the block (literally) at this all-natural yogurt bar are common; but for a healthy take on ice cream, its worth the wait. Top tart-flavored probiotic yogurt with local toppings include Chicago's own Milk and Honey granola and mochi.
The custard Scooter's in Lakeview, known at the oldest frozen custard shop in Chicago, is rich, decadent and sinfully delicious. The Elvis--a blizzard-like concoction of vanilla custard, Reese's peanut butter cups and bananas--is one of the most sought-after items on the menu.
If classic ice cream is what you're after, head to Bobtail. Get traditional flavors such as strawberry and chocolate chip or discover some specialty creations not found elsewhere, like the Lakeview barhopper (Dutch cocoa ice cream blended with Jack Daniels) or the nut bomb sundae (peanut butter chip ice cream topped with peanut butter, hot fudge and peanuts).
For those Chicago first-timers, a trip to Ghirardelli's is a must. The smell of delicious chocolate permeates the old-school ice cream parlor, where they serve massive sundaes topped with whipped cream and a cherry that are big enough to share (but worth the spulrge if you take one down solo).
When shopping at 900 North shops, pop up to the 8th floor of Bloomingdales, where Forty Carrots serves up healthy (and yummy, we might add) frozen yogurt with not-so-healthy toppings like chocolate-covered gummi bears. The combo is worth every penny--and calorie.
For a healthier sweet treat that doesn't sacrifice flavor, head to self-serve yogurt bar Forever Yogurt, where indulgent-sounding flavors such as Reese's peanut butter cup and red velvet cake are offered, along with an add-your own toppings bar. Cookie dough, brownies and sprinkles? Yes, please!
