I may have grown up in Cincinnati, Ohio--across that flat expanse known as Indiana--but in the eight-plus years I've called Chicago home, I've discovered more than a few favorite spots. So where does your intrepid City Editor go for her brunch fix? A cheap glass of wine? A fancy night out? Read on, dear Citysearchers, read on.

My Favorite Brunch Place

  1. 1 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended M. Henry

If anything can make getting up early on a weekend worthwhile, it's the Blackberry Bliss Cakes and the Fanny's Killer Fried Egg Sandwich (order it with a side of walnut pesto) at this sunny, perpetually packed Andersonville bakery/cafe hybrid. Devotees rejoiced when the formerly tiny spot expanded, adding more seats and a bakery counter. Don't be fooled, though. You'll still have to budget at least 30 minutes of waiting time for a table in the vintage-chic-meets-farmhouse dining room.

My Favorite Restaurant

There's a reason it's a classic. Rick Bayless's earthy-yet-refined Mexican flavors--which put Mexican cuisine on the fine-dining map--won over my chile-head heart years ago. The talented trendsters will come and go, but for my money, the surest route to gastronomic glee is a rich, silky Oaxacan mole and a made-from-scratch margarita.

My Favorite Take-Out

  1. 3 4 Star Rating: Recommended Sushi Toro

From the street, this teeny-tiny storefront may not look like anything special. When you scan for an empty table, however, it becomes readily apparent that the neighborhood is in on the secret. Impeccably fresh fish and unexpected ingredients like mango and sunflower seeds elevate Toro's maki rolls and leave me craving a repeat visit. No delivery, but picking up my order gives an excuse to say hi to Mitch, the sunny owner and sushi chef.

My Favorite Neighborhood Hangout

  1. 4 4.5 Star Rating: Recommended Bin Wine Café

1559 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622 (map)

My definition of the ideal "anytime" spot is a casual, warm, inviting wine bar with unfussy food, an affordable by-the-glass list and friendly service. This low-key storefront--right in my Wicker Park 'hood--satisfies those criteria, plus it sells all 36 of the wines on its list in its front retail section. The staff's encyclopedic wine knowledge makes for great recommendations, and in my case, unpremeditated purchases.

My Favorite Salon

  1. 5 5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended Gro Hair Salon

I found my stylist soul mate, Michael, here three years ago and have never looked back. At this salon named for its quirky Norwegian owner, the vibe is less Zen retreat, more hard rock hangout. The stylists, mostly decked out in punk rock attire, fit right in with the concrete floors, edgy art and dark, muted colors. But the minute you sit in the chair, you realize everyone is as friendly and professional as they are talented. The services aren't the cheapest in town, but I've never longed for a paper bag over my head after a visit. The best part: the scalp massage with each wash. Sheer bliss.
