Editorial Review for Tyrol Basin – by Citysearch Editors
The Scene
Tyrol first opened in 1958 as a diesel-powered lift and converted dairy barn/chalet. The diesel fumes are long-gone, but the charming chalet recently turned 100 years old and is still in use. Tyrol received updated chair lifts and groomers following a 1988 buyout, but the charm remains.
The Slopes
This medium-sized nob about 30 minutes west of Madison is known throughout the country for its immaculately manicured half pipe and terrain parks, which make snowboarders very happy. Skiers are far from left out: Tyrol lists one-third of its terrain as "most difficult," largely due to terrain parks with man-made jumps, berms and benches. Tyrol has hosted several U.S. Amateur Snowboard Association competitions, as well as late-season freestyle and big-air competitions. It's not uncommon for boarders to drive from far away places (say, Iowa) for an extended weekend of Rodeo Flips and Swiss Cheese Airs.
