King Crimson Editorial Review
The Skinny
Progressive rock's heyday in the 1970s featured lengthy and complex compositions that (depending on your perspective) either had a theatrical quality or exhibited pretentious wankery. Thirty-year veterans of the genre, King Crimson has garnered a large cult following on both counts. A little too out-there for widespread appeal, Crimson favors lengthy compositions, using unconventional instruments like the stick, mellotron, "touch guitar" and (more recently) V drums. While rock-oriented, they borrow from jazz and classical and even venture into ethereal soundscapes. If risk-taking, virtuoso improvising/noodling and quirky epic songwriting are your cup of tea, fill 'er up.
