The Scene – Located just north of East Jackson Boulevard in Grant Park, the Petrillo Music Shell was commissioned in 1931 by Mayor A.J. Cermak to lift the spirits of Chicagoans in the wake of the Great Depression. Recent improvements in the sound system mean that there's no need to crowd the stage; concertgoers can spread out comfortably and still hear the music. – – The Draw – Free concerts here regularly draw big-name talent from around the globe (and occasionally big-time crowds--more than 3,800 when packed). The Shell is ground zero for the annual Chicago Jazz…

VIP NOT the way to go.

by nemorino at Citysearch

First of all, when it is an orchestra you do not need to see. Second, our seats on the lawn were great. There are speakers at the front of the grass which helps, but you can hear fine without even the soloists. The whole atmosphere of bringing a chair and some wine is the greatest thing.

Great live music venue

by nathanstull_citysearch at Citysearch

I like the feel of the music shell very much. The acoustics sound good. I went late in the afternoon and the sun was in my eyes for quite some time, which made it hard to watch the stage. Also, the fence between the seats and the field seems odd and out of place. But, it's a great place to catch a show. During various festivals, there are lots of food and drink booths to fill your tummy while you listen to the tunes. If you are planning to sit in the field, bring a blanket or folding chairs.

VIP tickets are the way to go

by peterbehle_citysearch at Citysearch

Try to score some VIP tickets and sit in the folding chairs right in front of the stage. Otherwise you're on the lawn and can't really see that much. The quality of the sound system here is not very good, so if you can't see, what's the point. And bring plenty of sunscreen, you'll get absolutely baked here during (and waiting for) the summer day-time shows.

  • Pros: Great shows
  • Cons: Sound is poor
