Editorial Review for Facets Videotheque – by Chris Barsanti
The Selection
The Videotheque packs a lot into its small, squeaky-clean and well-lit locale (they must keep most of the 40,000 titles for sale or rental in the back, because there just isn't room out front). As you would expect, the foreign film selection is out of this world, with choices that go beyond the usual thin shelf of Bergman/Fellini/Kurosawa that chain stores stock. Also expect to find just about any animated or gay and lesbian film you might be searching for.
Rare and Out of Print
Facets prides itself on specializing in hard-to-find movies. That includes everything from obscure silent films to cutting-edge anime. Browse their catalog online or at two video terminals in the store.

I've been a member of Facets for a little over a year, and although I know I shouldn't spend that $24.00 a month on my limited budget, I can't let it go. My friends tell me how I should just switch to Netflix, as it's cheaper and more convenient. That may be, but they don't have the amazing selection that Facets does. And if something isn't on DVD, I can almost always get it on VHS (better than nothing, right?). The staff is always very friendly, knowledgeable, and just geeky enough. I also like to browse through the stacks of DVDs, or look things up on their computer.
Pros: Great selection, plus there's a movie theatre on the premises.
Cons: Kind of cramped, and hot titles are gone for weeks at a time.
