Editorial Review for 404 Wine Bar – by John Gerard McLaughlin
The Scene
Once you make it through Jack's Bar and Grill next door, you're home free. Though they're connected (and share a bathroom), Jack's and 404 have distinctly different clientele; the latter's neighborhood folks and area 30-somethings are a bit more polished than the former's tavern regulars. That said, 404 lacks the typical pretentions of wine bars outside of Europe, so patrons truly enjoy wine and conversation above a pop-jazz soundtrack. In the summer, the back room opens onto a pleasant walled garden; a fireplace keeps things cozy during cooler seasons.
The Draw
Wine prices are reasonable and the majority of selections come from California and France. Ports, cognacs, brandies and single malts are also available. A small food menu includes appetizers that go with wine, like pizzas, caramelized Brie and bruschetta, though more items are available from Jack's bar-food heavy menu.

Insider Tips
Where to SitToward the back, where it's less noisy. Choose either table seating or one of the sofas and easy chairs surrounding the fireplace.

We've been coming to 404/Jack's for years and unfortunately won't go back again. A week ago we ordered a wine that we knew well and they poured something completely different. We complained and they said we got what we ordered. We complained to the manager and she wouldn't rectify the situation. We went back again a week later and the same thing happened and the food was awful. What a shame -- used to be a great place before they started taking advantage.

They advertise themselves as unpretentious layed back place, this place is anything but that. Do not go here and do not have a party here! I tried to book a 30th birthday party for my friend and two managers were extremely rude and one even hung up on me. The manager accused me of not wanting to pay the room fee, which I had no problem doing. She also told me they had a minimum of 35 people when the website says a 30 person minimum. They changed their mind in the middle of the conversation and said she just decided not to do parties on Fridays or Saturdays. They also said we will not do a party at 9pm when I suggested that time. They were very rude and condenscending.
Pros: good wine
Cons: very rude staff, very rude managers, not accomodating for parties
