The Scene – The narrow space is a subtle blend of contrasting design elements: a cast-cement bar top framed with Wisconsin walnut; hand-cut birch lampshades casting a glow on room screens made of industrial washers; circus animals and martini glasses painted on the warm green walls. Televisions, pinball machines, a jukebox, garish neon are absent and the diverse clientele don't mind a bit. Conversation without distractions is the whole point. Among the friendliest places I've ever had the honor of mounting a barstool. The owners and staff go out of their way to make everyone (even those coming in for the first time) feel like a regular. The friendly patrons are always happy to meet new people, but it's not a "meet market" -- being a nuisance will result in as forcible an objection as is necessary. The house band (every Sunday night at 10:30) plays a great mix of funk, blues and jazz. Drinks are strong and inexpensive. Finally, The Long Room's outdoor patio has just opened -- stargazers rejoice!
