Great lunch spot if you're in the mood for chicken pad thai. One of the better chicken cuts in the area.
Always good.
Reasonable, above average service, good food.
I have been going there for years and always consistent
with the above.
Please find another Thai restaurant in Chicago. This was a very disappointing experience. Our server could not speak enough english to communicate with us. She misinformed us as to the Panang curry dish, even after I asked her which curry dish she recommended. She stated that it included several vegetables, which of course were not part of the dish. The crispy noodles were curiously missing. Instead I received a small plate of soggy rice. The rice and chicken curry provided a very bland combination, both in flavor and in texture. The server never returned to our table to ask how our food was. She did not apologize when she realized she had misinformed me. We were charged the full amount for this entree, even though I didn't eat even 1/4 of it, and they charged us 18% gratuity, as we were a party of six, even though we only ordered 4 entrees, no appetizers....!! In summary, poor quality and service.
Best Thai Food in Chicago. I work close by and eat there often. By far this place has best Thai food. I have gone to many other places but nothing compares.
Excellent Thai Food!. I lived within walking distance of Panang for over 3 years and ordered take-out from there quite frequently. I always loved their Pad Thai and had tried other Thai places in the area that were nowhere as good as Panang. I've since moved out of the neighborhood and still get into my car and make the drive over to Panang when I am in the mood for Thai food.
food not fresh. I went to Panang with some friends for lunch and got some rice dish with chicken and peppers. It did not taste at all fresh--the chicken was rubbery and over salted as if it had been sitting around for a while. I could only eat about half of it. A bit later I was feeling sick to my stomach from the food! It might have been because we went at an off peak time, but I recommend staying away from this place in general.
Horrible customer service, false advertising.
I placed a delivery order from Panang on their website (panangthai dot com), the total with tax and $2 delivery charge was $54.35. I submitted the order, and the website said it would be delivered within an hour, with the charge to be paid in cash upon delivery.
About an hour later, the food came, except the delivery man tried to charge me $56.35, claiming that the delivery charge is actually $4 for orders over $50. I told him that when I placed the order online, the total showed was $54.35, and I happened to have that page still up on my laptop so I even showed it to him. He said well this is wrong, and called the restaurant manager on his cellphone and told me to talk to the manager. The manager told me the same thing, that it was $4 for orders over $50 - and also that she KNOWS that the website incorrectly shows $2. I told her that since this is their mistake for having the wrong number on the website, I should not be responsible for paying the extra $2. She said no way, that is not possible, I HAVE to pay the $2. I explained to her how you cannot tell somebody that something is $2, then force them to pay $4 for it after they already purchased it, because they agreed to buy it for $2, not $4. And that I no longer wanted this order, if they are going to charge me the wrong price for it. At this point she told me she would let it slide "this time only", as though she were doing me a favor, and hung up on me.
Obviously the $2 is not the issue here, it's that: 1. the website falsely advertises the delivery charge to be $2 when it's not; 2. that the management is aware of this issue, and it hasn't been addressed; 3. that when a customer points out this error, and how he is being charged $4 for something that the checkout total shows as $2, the management rudely tells him that he HAS to pay the $4 charge; 4. that finally, after agreeing to let this customer off "just this time", the management hung up on him.
I will not be ordering from them again.
Best Thai Food in Chicago. Yes it is.. Panang makes very affordable, delicious Thai food. I love Thai food, and I've been shopping around for a good Thai restaurant in Chicago, and I conclude that this is the absolute best Thai food. Fortunately, I work close to Panang, so I have the opportunity to visit this awesome place several times a week. Their pad thai is the absolute best in Chicago. The pad see ew and lard na are delicious. Their Barbeque Pork Soup is amazing. One thing that needs improvement at this location is the Panang Noodle, which is a bit ironic. So as long as you don't get the Panang Noodle, you're good to go.
Not worth your money. It may be affordable Thai food, but we were not impressed at all with the quality of the food. We ordered two entrees and they were both very bland. My curry dish was labeled as spicy, but from tasting it, I have no clue why. The pork dish appeared as though it had been made several days ago. Definitely would not reccommend this place. The mango sticky rice dessert was very good, but wasn't good enough to make up for the poor entrees. Will absolutely not go back.
Best Crab Rangoon. Panang is one of the only places I will order Asian food from in the city. It took me months to find it but they have great food and I have not tried many places since. Try their Crab Rangoon when visiting.
maybe you just need the right thing..
i used to hunt the city for pad thai with a friend of mine, panang was a regular place for us because of the value, its location and the decent prices. only recently did i try the signature dish of panang which totally knocked my socks off. i've tried panang at other places and it just doesn't compare. in case you don't know what the dish it - it's wide noodles deep fried or something so they're crispy with a spicy peanut sauce. i haven't tried their other dishes, but their crab rangoon and the sate appetizers are also some of the best i've found. they're byob which has its pros and cons. but there's a liquor store right across the street.
maybe just go for the panang next time.
