Editorial Review for 12th Street Beach – by Citysearch Editors
In Short
The 12th Street Beach has well-known neighbors, the Adler Planetarium to the north and Northerly Island (formerly Meigs Field) to the south. But swimmers and divers know the real attraction here is the deep water off the concrete walkway, east of the beach. The original 1936 bathing pavilion was torn down in 1997 and replaced with a new beach house. The bathers are a pleasant, diverse mix of people, and there's little posing or pretense.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoBefore you dive in, check for markings on the concrete or, better yet, ask the lifeguard where it's safe. The water can get murky and seaweed-y at times.
