Editorial Review for Nick's Uptown – by John Dugan
The Scene
Chicago's original Nick's opened in the late '70s, but this cavernous location started serving in 2000. The original facade is well-preserved, though the interior has been colorfully redone--think dark pink and blue hues, high tables and chairs, and the company's signature pineapples. A lengthy bar and an unusual curved ceiling define the main area. The room to the left houses four pool tables, a smaller bar and a display of multicolored bottles. The sound system plays singable alt-rock.
The Draw
Nick's is open late, and business peaks after other area watering holes have shuttered for the night. Its size may make the bar appear empty early--even with a decent crowd--but it's good for leisurely cocktails or large groups. The full bar can accommodate almost any request, though draft beer (including Guinness, Harp and Bass) satisfies the majority of young professional and neighborhood patrons.

Nick's is sort of cavernous with soaring ceilings and a long bar, but the airy feeling is a nice change from the many crowded, cramped bars around. It's not really a see-and-be-seen scene, but more of a casual-meet-with-friends bar. Tables are nicely spaced, and the bar is fairly conversation friendly. There are pool tables in the adjacent room, but most people tend to gather in the main area.
Pros: Conersation friendly, Steps from Red line
