Lined with red-leather booths and low-lit for an incognito feel, this hotel bar is all class. Warm and sophisticated, the cozy environs are suited for relaxation and quiet conversation. Proud to have been one of the first Chicago bars to open its doors to guests after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the Coq d'Or maintains its long-standing tradition of service and elegance. The signature drink is the perfected Executive Martini--made with eight ice cubes and poured from a brandy snifter. A short food menu provides the same New England clam chowder, broiled whitefish and New England scrod…
Big Disappointment
by aleafinnyc at Citysearch
After going to Coq d’Or last weekend on a girls’ getaway with my best friend I made a mental note: If reviews of a place are from several years ago take them with a grain of salt! I don’t know Chicago well and don’t know anyone who lives in the area so CitySearch was what I relied on in choosing a jazz bar. Big mistake! Usually CitySearch reviews are quite reliable and I am sure the ones below were also written with honesty and good intentions, which leaves the only explanation that this place must have changed ownership and/or management. Coq D’Or is quite an ordinary bar with very low ceilings and unfriendly staff. We dealt with two waiters during our brief stay neither of whom was capable of smiling. I had a French martini ($12.50) that had no alcohol in it. I think they add something bitter to it to give the false taste of alcohol because I am a light-weight and drink rarely; and after downing the whole glass I didn’t even get a buzz. I am very disappointed with this place and would not recommend it to anyone. I am giving two stars only because I save one star to a place where apple martini has a razor in it.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Expensive, too loud, martini with no alcohol
BEST Martini in town
by mintie at Citysearch
Coq d'Or most certainly has the best martini in town. You might think the price is a little steep but it's actually 1.5 martinis.
The bartender is quite knowledgeable on vodkas and just makes a killer Martini. And the bites are good too.
Atmosphere is a little stodgy and grandpa-ey, but it's worth it for the drink.
- Pros: awesome martini
- Cons: stodgy, not hip

My bartender was Hana and she was very pleasant and funny.
I enjoyed my visit to Coq d'Or and I can understand why its been in business for 70 years!
Best Wishes for many more years!
