Slacker attitude downtown. While I love having access to a place to shop for washers and dryers and tools downtown, Sears needs to big-time step up their game to get me as a regular customer.

I have TWICE tried to buy appliances here, first a washer/dryer set (ended up going to Best Buy) and second a dishwasher (ended up going to Abt), BOTH times they couldn't deliver to me. I live in a vintage walkup downtown, and they just didn't want to deliver it there. I told them that with the washer/dryer and all of a sudden it became a big issue to get it delivered. With the dishwasher, I forgot about that problem and told them about where I lived and that I didn't have an elevator and they took the order, but the delivery guy showed up and wouldn't take it up to my unit!

This is downtown Chicago - sure there are a lot of high-rises with elevators, but there are also a lot of older buildings without. If Abt, a suburban super-store, can deliver to my vintage unit, why can't Sears, which is older than elevators and started in the City?

Really frustrating. That said, Sears does have a good price-match policy, so for things that don't need to be delivered it's a convenient place to get things as cheap as locally possible for those of us who live downtown.

No One Answers the phone-they do disconnect. It is 11am. I have been calling the Sears on State Street since 10:30am and no actual person ansers the phone. The "support" team answers, appologizes and transfers to the "store" but after several rings the store number automatically is disconnected. Disappointing. Guess they don't want the business.

Great shopping - few crowds. Great place to shop - I live in Lincoln Park and go out of my way to buy tools, appliances. Especially for appliances this is the place - nice lay out clean, and you can actually find someone to talk to. Just a great place to pick up household items in a relaxed environment. If I have the choice I always prefer this to Target, Home Depot. Enjoy it while it lasts!! I'm afraid it won't last, especially in this location, much longer -

Bargains to be found.... If you look carefully, especially in the corners of each floor, it's easy to find deals up to 70-80% off. Sure, it's Sears and it can get messy, but if you know what you need, this is a place to score for downtown bargain shoppers.

That great street has a new kid on the block.. The Scene
Sears is back in the Loop after 18 years away, and it's back big. The shiny, new 250,000-square-foot store unveils an updated motto ("Putting a new spin on things") to match its updated look: bright lighting, lots of smooth curves, easy-to-see signage, light wood and tile floors. Surprising combinations of merchandise--such as tools sharing the floor with baby clothes--make it easy for families to shop together. Retro-pop favorites (hits from "Grease" and the Jackson Five) hype up young shoppers in the colorful juniors department.

The Goods

Merchandise covers the whole house (inside and out) and the whole family. Of course, tools get prominent space, with a how-to cart for gadget demonstrations. Clothing focuses on trendy knockoffs that cost a whole lot less than designer brands. Catering to an urban clientele, the store offers amenities like delivery service and customer pickup. It also has eight specialty shops: Sears Optical, Java Java Coffee Shop, Sears Hearing Aid Center, Sears Portrait Studio, an Afrocentric area called Unity Square, Sears Dental and a hair salon.
