The Scene
The fire that shut down this restaurant in mid-2004 seems only to have made the place more popular, as Hot Doug's is thriving in its new location a half-mile west of the original. Not much has changed; the sunny yellow walls are still covered with kitschy wiener paraphernalia, and owner Doug Sohn has maintained his cheerful, sarcastic demeanor, joking with customers and shilling Hot Doug's CDs while taking orders at the counter.
The Food
Sohn's love of encased meats makes for an adventurous menu, from the classic Chicago-style dog to the Jennifer Garner (a "mighty hot" fire dog), the Elvis (Polish sausage), and weekly game sausages like rabbit, venison and rattlesnake. Sohn shows off his culinary-school chops with the daily-changing "celebrity sausage." One recent favorite, the Wazmo Nariz, tops tasty mushroom-Asiago sausage with blue cheese dijonnaise and sauteed shiitake mushrooms. Brilliant--and even better alongside an order of duck-fat french fries.

On a recent Roadtrip we made it a point to visit numerous Hot Dog places in the Chicago area and I must say that Hot Doug's is the winner. We got there before 11am and tried a few offerings and they were all great. Doug was cool and really helpful with the menu. It was awesome! I would eat there over SuperDawg any day of the week!
Pros: Doug, Fast Service, Parking
Cons: None

Ok, I've read the reviews and here is my "opinoin". First, I had the Chicago Dog with everything the Brat with everything and I small fry. Overall experience, average. I like the relsih and carmelized onions, nice touch. Hot Dog was the smallest I've ever had, decent flavor. Brat was good, not very good. Fries were good, NOT great.
Pros: Carmelized Onions and sweet relish
Cons: Hot dog, and brat were avergae
