Editorial Review for Paper Doll – by Holiday Dmitri

The Scene
Sisters Stacy and Kelly Swett pride themselves on offering the sweetest and schmaltziest gifts around town. Known for drawing most of its business from curious passersby, Paper Doll welcomes such casual browsers with its cheerful yellow walls, intimate setting and a friendly Swett sister behind the counter.

The Goods
Their gifts are perfect for those times where it's the thought, not the price tag, that counts--the most expensive gift is less than $50. You won't find anything even resembling a Hallmark product. Everything has a unique, personal quality--like handmade wrapping paper imported from Thailand. Lamps with animal-shaped paper shades and Chinese handbags made from laminated paper go for $25. The store features sentimental greeting cards and an assortment of whimsical products, including the popular Rosy Rings candles, available in scents like pumpkin pie and dirt. Whimsical fragrant soaps are by offbeat brands like Total Bitch and Bubble Monkey.

I live in the South Loop, but have been making the trek to PaperDoll's for unique gifts since 2000, when they where the only shop on Division street. I recently visited their new space just west of Damen, and couldn't have been happier to see result of their hard work and success. The high- ceilings and open space let you more easily move around and see all the cute products, and seems to have given them more space for even cuter products! I loved the old location, but this new space is so much nicer, but with the same friendly warm feeling. Store Pug Maude still greets patrons, and the same smiling face is behind the counter. Congrats PaperDoll!

Pros: Very Friendly, New Products

Cons: There aren't more locations!

I liked the selection that this store had, very cute items however I was a bit put off by the busyness of the store. I love boutique shopping and buying little gift and such but the amount was too hard to "search" through, almost like a thrift store peering through racks type of thing. The owners dog was cute, however I would have like to have seen the dog on a leash. Ok find but I have seen better.

Pros: Cute gifts!

Cons: Too many things to search through and dog not tied up.
