Great Food and Service. I tried the Meatloaf Sandwich at the Mane Event this year and got hooked. I went to the restaurant twice now and have to say, they really make fantastic food there. I had the stuffed mushroom appetizer, Meatloaf Sandwich, and the Carrot Cake. The Carrot Cake was huge, and the best I have tasted in a while. Sometimes they have coupons in some of the various coupon books and I got one in the mail, so keep and eye out for them.
Hidden Gem Well Worth the Drive. I was in Birch River for a late lunch/early dinner and was surprised at the quality and sophisticaton of the service and food. The atmosphere is lodgy, very comfortable and friendly. The servers were relaxed but professional and more than willing to offer suggestions about the menu and the dishes. The menu has a huge selection of variations on some traditional favorite's. My friends and I all thought it was a wonderful experience and even worth the drive to head out there again.
Hearty American comfort food satisfies in a sedate but casual suburban hotel setting..
The Scene
There's a corporate hotel feel to these quiet, earth-toned environs, warmed by stands of birch tree trunks and a massive stone fireplace complete with animal-head trophies. A few comfy booths dot the multilevel dining room, but the highlight of the space is the plush fireside lounge. Service needs work.
The Food
There are light and updated bar-food items (e.g., spinach-artichoke dip or crisp-fried, boursin-stuffed mushrooms with zingless horseradish sauce) on the American menu, but the real temptations are the classics. Soul-satisfying pot roast with tender potatoes and carrots, or a hunk of juicy meat loaf stuffed with mushrooms and plated with chunky mashers and gravy, deliver Sunday-dinner satisfaction any day of the week. Fried chicken gets a crispy-juicy "broasted" makeover, and mac 'n' cheese grows up with the pungent four-cheese cavatelli. To finish, dig into a huge, gooey-decadent banana cream pie encircled in graham cracker crust.
