“This little store is run by two guys, one kind, helpful, and informative older gentleman, and one cranky, rude, and very condescending man.”
“It seems it's becoming more and more difficult to find a good, honest coin shop run by guys who still have an interest in what they deal with and not JUST the money.”
Hones,Friendly Help.
I have been in a few times to sell some old American & foreign coins, and everyone in there has been very kind and helpful!! I absolutely recommend Glenview Coin & Collectibles to anyone with an interest in old coins, rare coins, old and rare collectibles, some jewelry, and autographed collector's items. They even have a few exceptionally rare & valuable $1,000.00 U.S. bills!!!
Great place, not just for selling valuables, but for buying them, too!!
Trust, but Verify. I stopped in for the first (and last) time on April 30, 2011 to sell some common date gold coins. A rather rude person behind the counter explained to me that there wasn't an ounce of gold in a $20 Double Eagle, and offered me $750. I thanked him and left. I sold the same coin in Niles for $1460.
I was shocked..a very unpleasant experience. Having just inherited a collection I was trying find a local business partner that would help me thru the process of liquidating it in a way that would be fair to both buyer and seller. I have been to 2 big city dealers for the same purpose, and was alway treated cordially and my questions answered directly. I was hoping to find a local business who I could give a number of sales to. Boy did I walk into the wrong place! This "businessman" was openly evasive and hostile. I was really taken aback at how rude the tall man named John was. I have a retail store too, (32yrs) and when I am out I try to be my own best customer, i.e. polite but clear in the questions I ask. Finally I just handed him a few silver dollars and asked for a price. He was substantially below the 2 other dealers I had shown them to. When I pointed that out, he said "Oh they will just take it off somewhere else". That could be true, but at least I will be treated better! I would be out of business if I treated my customers the way he treated me. He has been there 25 years, what a shame to represent himself this way.
Great Friendly Place - Kid Friendly Too.
John, the owner - who is in his late 40's/early 50's and an older gentleman - are usually the ones who work there and are both great. My son is a coin collector and both spend time talking to him, answering all of his questions, showing him anything he wants to see and they usually include a special coin as part of his change (like a Kennedy half dollar, new dollar coin, etc.).
This year before we went to the Springfield penny release, John even gave my son tips and ideas so that he would know what to expect and could make it memorable. Which it absolutely was!
We have spent hours at Glenview Coin & Collectibles and have always been treated very respectfully.
Good selection, but.... It seems it's becoming more and more difficult to find a good, honest coin shop run by guys who still have an interest in what they deal with and not JUST the money. This little store is run by two guys, one kind, helpful, and informative older gentleman, and one cranky, rude, and very condescending man. I had purchased a few coins here until I went the last time and had to deal with the younger of the two guys. I think he might be the owner. I am by no stretch of the imagination a novice collector, but I sure was treated like one. I felt like I was being talked down to like a young child, all the while, the guy didn't make eye contact with me and just kind of sighed and rolled his eyes. You can be sure I didn't spend any money there that day, nor will I ever. Which is unfortunate, because they do have some decent items there. This guy has become what many guys in the hobby have become, money-hungry and indifferent to the hobby. Oh well. Time to move on I guess!
