Editorial Review for Glunz Family Winery & Cellars – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
The Glunz family has been in the wine business since 1888, when the House of Glunz wine shop opened in downtown Chicago. Since 1993, Helen Glunz and her 10 (count 'em) children have manned the tanks at this north suburban winery. The grapes are grown elsewhere, but the wines are blended, bottled and stored right here.
The Goods
Glunz specializes in small-batch fortified wines, including port, sherry, and an award-winning raspberry dessert wine. They also make what Helen calls "fun wines," like sangria, berry cooler, May wine and Glögg, a kind of mulled spice wine. Bottles range in price from $8.95 for a liter bottle of table wine to $25 for an older vintage port.
