Don't believe the hype.
After reading some of the stellar reviews here and elsewhere, I had to try this place. To me, atmosphere and service are secondary to great-tasting, authentic food, so the warnings about service quality did not faze me. Unfortunately, the food turned out to be the worst part of the experience. We had the Mongolian beef and the Szechwan beef dinners. Both were the same heavily-Americanized, goopy, saucy stuff you can find at any typical Chinese joint in any mall plaza in the suburbs; and probably a bit blander than average. The Szechwan was the worse of the two, being quite bland and not at all spicy. We were coming here expressly to avoid this exact type of food--we could have just gone to the place around the corner for that--so there was an extra element of disappointment. Not only was the food terrible, but as in the old joke, the portions were too small; neither of us were near full afterwards. The dinner didn't come with any extras, such as eggrolls or even soup, which is unusual.
I can't explain the disparity with previous reviews, so I will assume that previous reviewers did have a great experience, but that Won Ton Gourmet must recently be under new management. Certainly, with the vast number of Chinese restaurants within the area and even within a few minutes, there is no reason to go here unless you live next door. Even then, you're paying too much for mediocrity.
Just like being in Hongkong. Living in the northern suburbs, I usually have to travel all the way to Chinatown for authentic Chinese food. However, since Won Ton Gourmet opened, I've been going here instead to satisfy my "cravings". Even though it's still a 50 minute drive from where I live, I make the trek as their food is absolutely authentic - Hongkong style. From the noisy atmosphere (they're usually packed), right down to the cavalier attitudes of the waiters, Won Ton Gourmet reminds me of being in Hongkong. Prices are just like in Hongkong, as well -- reasonable and affordable. I highly recommend this place if you love authentic Chinese food.
