In Short
A Skokie favorite since 1975, this nautically inspired restaurant is popular with locals and guests in the adjoining Howard Johnson's hotel. Located near the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, Don's also draws a substantial pre- and post-show crowd. Food is fresh and simple, with plenty of choices for seafood lovers: piping-hot, meaty crab cakes; fresh shrimp cocktail; blackened tuna; and grilled salmon. Also available: an array of prime steaks, plus a big, meaty burger.

This place really hits the mark. Their food is SOOOOOO GOOOOD. To start, they have the best bread--hot and crispy crust. I have tried the crab cakes, which are like ALL CRAB, not full of bread crumbs and fillers. Their softshell crab is amazing. Every meal comes with any type of salad or soup you want, including a greek or strawberry salad! Among other things, I have also tried the trout filled with spinach topped with lobster cream sauce and I am not one for rich foods, but this was phenomenal and not nearly as heavy as it sounds. The fish dinners that I have tried are accompanied by julienne vegetables and mashed potatoes that were delicious. Even their desserts are incredible and I am not a dessert person!

Don's Fishmarket is located right at Skokie and Gross Pointe, in sort of an odd location. They have a fairly wide range of menu choices, including salads, pastas, etc. I have eaten there for lunch, and found the cuisine decent as well as the service, but nothing remarkable.

Not having been to Don's Fishmarket, except the Tavern, in some years, my wife and I were curious as to whether it had improved. In summary, it is better than the low point we last experienced. As for appetizers, the stuffed artichoke hearts were delicious even if the accompanying sauce was not, but the mussels were undercooked even though plentiful. The Nantucket scallops and Dover sole were topnotch with pleasing sauces. There was a mixup on side dishes so rice was brought instead of red potatoes, but the waiter corrected that. Pumpkin cheesecake was quite good, although not great. WIne was excellent and appropriately priced. All in all, a good but not perfect catch at Don's Fishmarket.
