the was the worst in a long time. I was so disappointed this year. the pot pie was cold, the cake in the yule log dried out and stale tasting. Our waiter kept giving us the wrong coffee (regular vs decaf). Not to mention we asked for ranch dressing on house salad and got both ranch and vigineratte. not a tasty combo. We had our menus on our table for more than 1/2 the meal, got silverware after we got our salads and our drinks after our salads. then as we got our silverware, we got our meal. this is very sloppy service and not what we are used to from the walnut room/ got a pager at 1pm was told to come back at 5. people were walking up to entrance and just getting in without pager. WTF??? This was not worth the wait and will be emailing the GM of the Walnut Room this review

Beautiful view~. My boss took us to this restaurant and if was absolutely lovely. The view we had to look at was beautiful. The food was great and the wait staff were perfectly well mannered.

Crushed about the Walnut Room!. My husband and I recently went to the Walnut Room for dinner on a Wednesday night. I grew up hearing what a wonderful place it was especially during the holidays. So, when we were in the city during the holiday season, that was the first place I thought of to go. Needless to say, we were both very disappointed. Let me paint a picture, a huge beautiful Christmas tree sitting on a cheesy read wood stage with fake swags all around it, smashed food on the carpet which no one bothered to clean up, and our drinks were served in dirty sticky glasses. The wait staff we withnessed and that waited on us looked and acted very unprofessional. One man inparticular chuckled a very sarcastic "f--- you" as walked away from the group he was serving. The food, well their world famous potpie as described by the waiter was basically a shallow bowl of cream of chicken soup with a couple of puff pastry triangles on it. My husband's meal wasn't any better. He swears they simply have a bunch of microwaves in the back and are heating up frozen food as they go. Sad. Maybe my expectations were too high but I regret going to the Walnut Room. There are so many wonderful restaurants in the city, this can't hold a dime to any of them.

Beautiful - Elegant!. My friend & I went to the Walnut Room for lunch before a matinee Broadway show. We were seated very promptly. All of the staff were very friendly and accomodating. We asked to be seated by the window and we were. The view of the Loop was so nice. The decorations for the holidays were fantastic! The decorated Christmas tree was gorgeous. The meals offered were moderately priced and extremely generous. I would recommend the Walnut Room to anyone. Very elegant and an all around pleasant experience! It is very close to all of the Theatres and shopping at Macy's is always fun. The store has such history - the window decorations for the holiday are enchanting. I wish I had all of my grandchildren with me - they would have also enjoyed the decorations and menu at the restaurant.

Great tradition in Chicago. We had to visit the Walnut room in Macy's (Marshall Fields on State Street) when we went to Chicago. This is a gorgeous restaurant with so much history, and it has been preserved so well.

We just went for coffee, but the desserts called to us and we shared a Frango mint pie, yum!!! It looks like a place that would be too fancy for "regular" people, but the food was really reasonably priced, and we felt comfortable in our jeans. It is a place to see, if you appreciate historic places, and enjoy good food.

Ladies and families take a break from shopping at this lovely dining room in Marshall Fields.. The Scene
On the seventh floo'r of Macys on State, this Chicago classic is a high-ceilinged room that abounds with crystal chandeliers and imported dark Russian wood. Natural light floods through windows looking out onto the busy avenue. The crowd is a mix of ladies who lunch, tourists and corporate diners. Despite the black-tie service, the atmosphere is comfortable and unstuffy.

The Food
You'll find plenty of classics on the menu--spinach salad, chicken potpie--but also some choices for the daring. Coconut shrimp is a fun appetizer: four jumbo butterflied shrimp skewered to a chunk of pineapple, begging to be dipped into scintillating sesame-mango and chipotle-cream sauces. The classic Peach Nest tuna salad is a more conservative plate, with tuna salad and assorted fresh fruit and bread. Chicken potpie is a steaming bowl of chicken, peas and carrots hidden below an inch-thick puff pastry cap. Finish with another Windy City classic: Frango mint chocolate ice cream pie.

A must try!. The food quality and price is quite a value for your money and so conveniently located. I've been here numerous times & I have have tried a wide variety of dishes. Best pasta dish is the chicken tortellini and the chicken pot pie is delicious. The best part is that it comes with the spinach salad. The first time I ordered it, I wasn't too enthuised the salad had nuts and mandarin oranges on it but that thought changed once I tasted it. This salad is excellent!! The seafood ravioli is good but not real filling. The Frango mint ice cream pie is scrumptous, this is no lie! If you're too full for desert, don't fret, they give diners a Frango chocolate with the check! They don't take reservations from Thanksgiving to New Year's, so get there early and expect a wait, or better yet, go before Thanksgiving!!
