Editorial Review for Belmont Harbor Dog Beach – by Colin Murphy

The Scene
Wave action deposited this triangular patch of sand in a protected corner of Belmont Harbor sometime in the 1980s. When local residents began unleashing their pooches here, the city gave the unofficial nod for dogs to run free without fear of ticketing. Because it's fenced and surrounded by water, the beach is safe for dogs both amphibious and landlubberly. The spot is popular morning and evening, and gets packed on weekends.

The Experience
Strong swimmers can get their paddle on without fear of dangerous currents, and there's usually a pack of other breeds making chase around the sandy beach. Though watercraft ply this working marina, speeds are low and the nearest boat slips are some thirty meters off, well clear of the beach. While it looks inviting for human uses too, the sand does serve as a giant canine potty, so this isn't the ideal lakefront sun and sandcastles spot.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Some people complain that marine fuel in the harbor water can irritate dogs' eyes and skin. While thousands use the beach with no ill effects, owners of more sensitive dogs might let them swim elsewhere, or be sure wash them promptly afterwards.

My dog told me to write this review ... Sophi likes Belmont Harbor because there is a good dog beach that is very fun. While my dog swims after her ball, she watches the boats float in and out of the harbor. She likes it even better when I wear sandals and get my feet wet. Sophi also feels more comfortable when I bring a baggie, so she doesn't get embarrassed in front of her other canine playmates.

Pros: no leashes, lots of dogs, fairly clean

Cons: LSD traffic
