This self-proclaimed "world's most dangerous rock 'n' roll dueling piano bar" brings everyone together from groups of frat boys, conventioneers and bachelorette party-goers to sing classics like "Sweet Caroline" and "Piano Man." The singing is the draw but it's the cheap bar food like gooey potato skins and eight-ounce angus burgers as well as the Howl Buckets--86 ounces of alcoholic anticipation--that keep the spirits lively. The big, open space hosts piano shows throughout the night based on audience requests. Participation is not only requested; it's required.

Editor's Tips

Fun Fact:
Every hour on the hour, the wait staff performs wacky choreographed dance routines.

DO NOT RESERVE A TABLE AT HOWL AT THE MOON!

by ChicagoAlleyCat at Citysearch

I entered into a contract and paid for reservations for 3 tables at Howl at the Moon for my birthday earlier this year. Periodically throughout the night one of my tables would be empty (people out smoking or gathered around the other 2 tables) and a group of women repeatedly took over the table. I explained to them that I paid over $100 to reserve that table for the night but they refused to move so we alerted our server who called the bouncer. It took a while for the bouncer to actually get them to move. This happened numerous time and after a couple of times of calling the bouncer over to kick them off the table we talked to the manager on duty. He said there was nothing he could do (how about telling them if they do it one more time that they would have to leave?) and to call the person I signed the reservation contract with to discuss a refund for that table since we could not sit at it for half the night. Well, to make a long story short I got the run around. I had a lawyer send corporate a letter regarding their breach of contract (not honoring the reservation of all 3 tables that I paid for) and they immediately responded with a refund.

The one star is for the server. She was very efficient and responsive.

seriouly left howling with anger and disgust

by phoenixchicago at Citysearch

So I spoiled my one Chicago evening at Howl at the moon. I walked in on a Tuesday night. my greviences are:-

1) Indifferent staff

2) no one offered me a place

3) for 20 minutes no one took any orders

4)Indifferent music with too much public participation

5) Beatles were massacred there

6)Food served without napkins and cutlery

7) had to request for napkins

8) the waitress was ready to had me food at the bar when I was standing, she actually wanted me to take the plate from her and carry it to any table I wanted.

9) felt absolutely humilated

So I thought about the reasons, which i think are:-

I was brown skinned Asian. This place is meant only for White people

The staff is inadequately trained

the musicians are bad

I personally felt offened for the first time in USA and it was probably my race. Im not sure but thats how I felt.

So if you are not a White man, please make sure you are not insuled like I was. very bad experience in deed.Hopeles place.

6) wrong bill

Had a blast

by jessicamilliman at Citysearch

So I went to Howl with a group of friends last weekend and we all had a great time! I have been there before, cause I live downtown Chicago, but I brought some Howl virgins in for a first time experience..and they too loved it. The service was good, the bartenders were friendly and on top of things, the drinks were great (I recommend getting a bucket if you're with a large group) and the piano players were awesome. Howl is by far the best piano bar I have been to!

Dont see what the hype is about

by DancingDana at Citysearch

I dont see what the hype is about for this place. We had reservations here and when we got there our tables were taken, when we asked why we did not have seating they said they only held them till 8pm., We arrived at 8:05. The reason we were late getting in is because the guy at the door could not find our name on the list and was trying to charge us afer we already paid. It was crowded and we could not even get a drink.

  • Pros: music is good
  • Cons: no seating rude staff

I had my bachlorette party there and it was a blast. There was great music and the performers really got into the crowd. There was a lot of dancing and you better be ready to laugh your butt off. I definetly recommend going to howl at the moon, just make sure you get there a little early to get a good seat.

  • Pros: great music and fun atmosphere
  • Cons: u have to make sure you get there a little early
