A truly great doctor
by meowkot at Citysearch
We love him. My daughter who just turned 5 is always very excited to see him. She jumps on his lap and wants to hug him the whole visit. My husband and I are against circumcision and vaccines. Dr. Ettner was just fine with that. As for vaccines our children get the least amounts possible. He is great at homeopathic remedies for everything we've asked. He picks up the business phone even if it's Saturday at 9PM (I think he has the phone calls sent to his cell). He truly has been a pleasure to work with and we fully trust that our children are in great hands with him. I highly recommend him to anyone that thinks outside the box and want's a more green doctor.
- Pros: knows his stuff and is pretty "green"
- Cons: an hour drive from my house
Fabulous doctor!!!

I am very picky about who I see for medical services and I have found Frederick to be exceptional, even returning calls on weekends to treat flare-ups of an occSional bronchial condition. He is compassionate, knowledgable And very personable--- well worth the drive from Chicago to out of the way Evanston.
Worst Doctor Experience Ever
by chicagoland at Citysearch
This was the worst experience of working with a doctor I've ever had. His receptionist was rude and short-tempered and this doctor is arrogant and flippant. We even had another referral doctor's nurse refuse to deal with this receptionist anymore. His reputation as an alternative healer is a joke. For what was later diagnosed as complete adrenal exhaustion and thyroid dysfunction he suggested therapy and made it clear he thought I was nutty in his oh so superior way. Though my thyroid levels were verging on normal for when he went to school 30 years ago, those levels have changed dramatically and he knew nothing about the inability to convert T4 to active T3. He never suggested any saliva or stool testing. In fact, there was nothing "alternative" about his methods except maybe hiring assistants who are gender change candidates from his wife's practice. I have untold stories that would make your hair stand up but suffice to say EVERY experience we had with this doctor was traumatic and negative for our family. After finding a much better doctor I was able to heal, lose 30 pounds and feel better than I had in 15 years. Thank God I left there.
- Pros: He was ok with our decision to selectively vaccinate
- Cons: He was superior, uninformed, ineffective and his receptionist was the WORST.
This doctor is worth the drive...

I moved from NYC to Iowa and my doctor in NYC recommended that I see Dr. Ettner as my primary physician even if he is in Chicago. This was almost a decade ago...and I have not regretted taking a day or two off work just to drive and see Dr. Ettner. I work for the University of Iowa and I am very familiar with how we run our clinics. The first time I met with Dr. Ettner...he did not look at my chart but asked me about myself. He took his time to get to know me for over a half hour. This is routine each time I see him for the last 8-9 years now. He means it when he say's "call me anytime" and his staff is wonderful and caring (Hi! Sarah). He is actively involved in the lives of his patients and his knowledge is extremely current. He is a treasure in the Chicago area...and in the midwest for that matter. Did I also mention that he has great personality?
- Pros: Clinic attached to St. Francis Hospital, accessible, safe neighborhood, free parking, handicap accessible
- Cons: you want to spend more time with him
