Solid pick for both breakfast & lunch. Tasty coffee and muffins (pumpkin is tops!). Sandwiches are giant & well-priced: Try the New Veggie.

Tips for Red Hen Bread

May 18, 2006

Get your fresh-baked bread, bagels, and muffins before they sell out at this popular Bucktown bakery.. In Short
Red Hen bakes bread for some of the city's finest restaurants, but you don't have to dine out to sink your teeth into a fresh-baked loaf. Founded by Art Institute grads and modeled after small European bakeries, Red Hen sells (and sells out of) a couple dozen reasonably priced loaves each day. Standards include baguettes, caraway rye, olive rosemary boule and challah, along with more exotic offerings such as walnut currant batons and Pullman brioche.

Best Bread inthe City!. I adore Red Hen and I am very picky about my bread. I just finished the yummiest sandwich from there and cannot wait to go back for more. Really worth the extra few pennies that it costs.

Good Bread - Come Early. Good bread, but come early. They are often out. Service can be good and sometimes snotty and alouf. Hip attitude not good for business.

Best bakery in town. The bread, coffee drinks and service here are phenomenal. It's just too bad they don't have a seating area (so you have to take the sandwiches and so on to go). The scones, bagels and baguettes are great, but I advise the garlic ring, which comes with a garlic paste in the middle. Plus, the service is always super friendly, and the folks who work there are great with recommendations if they're featuring a new item.

YUM!. Everything here is wonderful. I haven't had a bad experience yet! The Lakeview location is also great (500 W. Diversey). Try the sweet potato pecan bread -- it's delicious.
