Best Chili, Nice Staff! – Haven't been to this location in a while, but I used to come here for lunch all the time. We had the nicest older lady as our waitress every time - she even remembered our order! And we sat at the same table in the corner by the game machine every time too! I always ordered a hot dog with a cup of chili and made my own chili dog - so delicious! I never got a chance to try the ice cream. I was always full from the meal!
Best Ice Cream Anywhere – Lindy's/Gertie's is a South Side phenomenon, a small chain that does chili, cheap eats, and most especially ice cream brilliantly. You won't find these anywhere on the North Side or North Suburbs, but that's okay, we South Siders like our local secret. :) Even though the place sells primarily burgers and dogs (and chili, of course), it's not fast food. You sit down in a plush diner-style booth, your orders are taken by a waitress, everything is made up fresh, and they do "have it your way" much better than Burger King ever could. The chili is award-winning and I bring visitors from all over to sample it. They're also the only place you can find Green River soda outside of the month of March. But the best part is the ice cream. Better ice cream doesn't exist. I would put Gertie's ice cream up against any other ice cream and see it a winner. This ice cream is what custard aspires to be and fails. Whether you're eating it straight up in a cup or a cone, or you're like me and ask for a banana split (so big, I have to share it with a partner), there's no finer frozen treat in town.
It's two favorites in one at this laid-back South Side chili (Lindy's) and ice cream (Gertie's) emporium, – The Scene
Serving some of the city's best chili since 1924, this Chicagoland original entices local families, then a late-night crowd that usually includes plenty of hungry cops. The smallish dining room is lined with old-time Chicago memorabilia and brimming with stuffed animals (available for purchase). Seat-yourself booths and tables offer more breathing room for couples with kids.
Don't miss the thick, hearty tomato- and ground beef-flecked chili, served with or without beans or macaroni--plus cheese, sour cream and chopped onions on request. For a twist, try some atop cavatelli pasta with a side of garlic bread for dipping. Crunchy charred Polish sausage with salty, hand-cut fries is another favorite. On the sweet side, there are mile-high, old-fashioned hot-fudge sundaes topped with real whipped cream and Nabisco wafers; belt-busting banana splits; and triple-thick chocolate milk shakes topped with maraschino cherries.
