The Scene
The front room of this neighborhood restaurant screams "deli," with a large glass case offering panini, pasta and cold sandwiches to go and a few small tables. A side entrance opens into a darker, dimly lit dining room, with pale wooden chairs, butcher paper-topped tables, and color photos of Italy hanging next to hand-painted murals.
The Food
Lucia's basic Italian fare exceeds expectations. For starters, try lightly fried calamari, eggplant rolled and stuffed with four delicate cheeses, or a Caprese salad with giant red tomatoes and herb-flecked baby mozzarella. But don't fill up--more than a dozen pasta options await. Tossed with brown butter, fried sage and crunchy walnuts, pumpkin-filled ravioli is a taste of fall. Fork-tender whole red snapper is de-boned, smothered in herbs, though sides of roasted potatoes and summer squash are underseasoned. Homemade desserts include a liquor-soaked tiramisu, a vanilla-laden panna cotta and a chocolate semi-freddo.

Hands down, best meatball sub in the city of Chicago! Very friendly and quick service, but most important, clean and delicious.

Go to the deli and order the Yale. Delicious proscuitto, fresh tomato, basil, mozzarella, pesto mayo on quality french bread... it's the best! Dinner in the dining room is also very good. No frills, just good food at reasonable prices, and BYO is a definite plus. Staff is always friendly.

Lucia's dining room is a hidden surprise in back of the storefront. The dining room is small and comfortable, like eating with friends. The excellent service picks up on this vibe, friendly and efficient. The menu holds no surprises, but the quality and care in preparation and presentation are very high. Pumpkin ravioli, once an exotic dish but now ubiquitous, get a special treatment here, with emphasis on savory herbs and roasted walnuts rather than the sweet dessert/entree hybrid served more typically. The chef's fresh pasta special, a vegetarian medly of tomatoes and asparagus, was simple and satisfying. Highly recommended.
