The Scene – Bright Mexican folk art, glazed tile work and exposed brick give this colorful neighborhood restaurant a vibrant feel, while friendly service and cheap prices keep the atmosphere comfortable--not to mention loud. – – The Food – The regional Mexican menu offers plenty of favorites (flautas, quesadillas, tacos), but with an upscale tweak. Grab the plato surtido appetizer sampler, with guacamole spiked with serrano chile and lime, plus tender, tangy bay scallop ceviche on crispy chips, and cute masa cups stuffed with earthy mushrooms. Do not choose to go to Platiyo

Platiyo used to be a very fun, good restaurant owned by Mia Francesca. That was two years ago. We went for the first time post-sale, and it is just absolutely horrendous. We were there for 2 hours, during which time they managed to (1) screw up every single drink order, (2) take our order, (3) bring us the saltiest guacamole that anyone had ever had (and don't get me wrong -- I love salt!), and (4) an hour and a half in, bring us the soup that some of us had ordered -- it was actually boiling (full boil!!!). We left because we still hadn't gotten entrees. The kickers: (1) we were the only people in the restaurant (so it's not at all like the kitchen got slammed; literally, one other table was occupied), and (2) the waiter acted as if this happened every single day (which it probably does) and offered no explanation or apology.
We were all simply stunned. The only thing that I can think of is that they intend to go out of business very shortly.
- Pros: location
- Cons: service, food, that about covers it
Bland food, slow service...not recommended

No wonder we could get a reservation for two at 9 p.m. on a Friday...at ten minutes to 9. The service was below average (entrees took 45 minutes) and the waitress was not very attentive. The food was the blandest mexican food that I've ever had. My chicken fajitas were greasy and tasteless. My wife ordered enchiladas and they were also extremely bland. We asked for extra suiza sauce hoping that it would liven things up, but nope! I hate to say it, but the food isn't better than the place with burritos 'as big as your head.' I would not recommend this place for dinner.
- Pros: Late notice reservation
- Cons: Bland food, slow service, poor value overall
Save your bucks and go to a cheap Mexican place

I took my husband here for his birthday, excited to try this "upscale" Mexican restaurant. Despite our reservations and the early hour -- before the dinner rush -- we still had to wait at the noisy bar, standing awkwardly because there was no place to sit, and avoiding rude waiters who pushed by us. The food was absolutely ordinary, the kind of enchilada platters and taco-type plates you can get anywhere else for half the price. The margarita tasted like it had no alcohol in it, and the service was very slow.
- Pros: OK food
- Cons: slow service, uncaring staff, bad value
Just...unpleasant

First tried to eat here back in July...after one drink at the bar, sweat pouring off us, it became obvious the AC wasn't working. Staff apologized but seemed unconcerned. Went back last night. We were seated, our waiter introduced himself, and then he disappeared and a different one waited on us. Uh, OK. We drank a weak margarita and waited a good 10 min. for someone to take our order. Appetizer arrived on steaming-hot plate, but the actual food was only warm. Uh, OK. Husband ordered enchiladas, I ordered salmon. After some time, waiter came back and said, "Your food is almost ready, but the salmon is unavailable tonight." OK, and why didn't you say so when we ordered? I changed my order and husband and I noted that he would be eating before my food even arrived. Well, no...15 minutes went by, my food arrived, and husband was served reheated, congealed enchiladas. We ate anyway, food only average in taste, reheated enchiladas with a texture of tree bark. Wanting to escape, we asked for the check, which showed up with a charge for the "unavailable" salmon as well as the other food. Waiter apologized and fixed it but seemed unconcerned. Overall, a pointless experience...there are several way better and cheaper Mexican places in the neighborhood. Don't bother.
- Pros: extremely fast clearing the table
- Cons: indifferent service, dull food, very poor food preparation

our party of four adults and a 3 yr old arrived at 5:45pm on a monday. there was one table of 6 in the dinning room and about 12 people dining outside. We finally got our drinks at 6pm including a poorly made frozen margarita. the guacamole appetizer arrived at 620 and was nothing more than a smashed avocado mixed with some cilantro, very tastless and served with stale taco chips. the entrees arrived at 645 and was the worst tasting mexican food we have ever experienced including tacos that were extremely dry and bland and my chile rellenos which was full of hard seeds and very salty cheese. they had microwaved the entiree dinner because my rice was like mush. in fairness, the enchilas were good. it appeared that the ingredients were of good quality but poorly prepared. I cannot believe that this terrible restaurant was rated 9.5 on this website. this meal which included one beer and two glasses of sangria cost $115. we could have had a better meal at taco bell. come on chicago, don't be so easily satisfied with mediocrity and demand good service and well prepared food.
- Pros: good ambience, nice patio
- Cons: bad service, bad food, overpriced
