The Scene – Artsy with vintage construction--including warm, sunset-hued walls with edgy photography of BMW bikes and original tin ceilings--thanks to a recent post-dive revamp. Part sports bar, part local watering hole, Small Bar attracts patrons who range from whisky-swilling, second-shift workers by day to chatty buddies and intimate newlyweds by night. Tunes belting out from the juke are likewise eclectic, with everything from Beastie Boys and Beck to Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Stevie Ray Vaughan. – – The Draw – Besides a diverse, uncliquey crowd no…

Editor's Tips

Food for Thought:
By mid-2003, the bar plans to open a kitchen serving soups, snacks and sandwiches. In the meantime, a potluck of sorts has developed; owners and regulars often provide free eats like hot dogs, sloppy joe's or nachos.
A Little Something Special:
Paying props to its namesake, Small Bar offers 7 oz. domestic shorties for $1.25 daily.

  2. If you're not in the mood to travel all the way up North to Hopleaf for your favorite Belgian specialty beers, Ukrainian Village offers you
  3. admit, I made a mistake in purchasing a beer for someone who didn't have their ID on them (and quickly apologized to said bartender for my bar faux pas), but the situation absolutely did not warrant the bartender(s) to be as rude, threatening, and ugly
  4. If you don't mind slow service, surly waitstaff, smelling like fried food, getting called ugly and vitriol-filled names and threatened with bodily harm by the scraggly, scrawny, skanky blond bartender and his meth-mouth side kick, then this bar is for you

Best Hummus I've had in the city!

by jlouisechicago

Being a bit of a hummus connoisseur, I have taste-tested dozens of different kinds of hummus offered by various restaurants in the city. The hummus at Small Bar beats out even the hummus at all the Greek places I've tried! It's pretty spicy, so if you don't like your food spicy you probably shouldn't try it. But with the celery and carrots that come with it, I thought the spice was just right, especially the spice to garlic to bean ratio. It was just terrific! I may have to make a special trip down to Wicker Park from Andersonville just to have the hummus again. The beer list is nice, too.

  • Pros: Hummus!! Nice waitress, laid-back atmosphere
  • Cons: Parking was a drag.

Holy Crazy Bartender, Batman!

by geektasticool

If you don't mind slow service, surly waitstaff, smelling like fried food, getting called ugly and vitriol-filled names and threatened with bodily harm by the scraggly, scrawny, skanky blond bartender and his meth-mouth side kick, then this bar is for you, because this is exactly what happened to me and my group of nine people on 4/17/08.

I admit, I made a mistake in purchasing a beer for someone who didn't have their ID on them (and quickly apologized to said bartender for my bar faux pas), but the situation absolutely did not warrant the bartender(s) to be as rude, threatening, and ugly as he was, not only to me, but to my entire group--of which none had said a word to him other than ordering their food and drinks.

If that's not your scene, I'd suggest staying far, far away from this place.

Oh how I love Small Bar

by quaffwine

This place is often the starting point - or more likely the fine ending to a fun evening out. Living in the neighborhood, I have come to revere this small establishment for the come as you are attitude, fantastic beer list and decent food. I have come alone, with friends, with family, coworkers -- the lot and always had a good time. On any given night there will be a wide range of characters inside the place, but somehow it always feels comfortable. Check it out. And special thanks to Anna for being a friend and a great barkeep.

  • Pros: Beer list, Prompt Service, Come as you are
  • Cons: Smoke, Can be crowded, Spirit selections
