American Science & Surplus

Incredible Stuff at Unbelievable Prices

  • Toys, Kits, Experiments
  • Telescopes, Microscopes
  • Hobby, Crafts, Supplies

Here at American Science & Surplus we are fascinated by discovery and invention. And we are dedicated to having fun along the way. We offer an eclectic range of products, many with a science or educational tilt to them, others simply handy or amusing. Value is important, and whenever we can, we carry surplus at prices well below retail. We love closeouts, inventory overruns, mis-manufactures, and items whose time has not come.

Editorial Review for American Science & Surplus – by Candy Purdom and Elisa Kronish

The Scene
In a nondescript strip mall (look for the Sherwin Williams store), American Science doesn't look like anything special, though a new paint job has brightened it up some. Most of the decor consists of random merchandise piled on shelves and in display bins and boxes. Funny signs and labels elicit frequent giggles from customers.

The Goods
The emphasis is on "surplus." The inventory is a constant flow of miscellaneous science and novelty items: art supplies, binoculars, medical paraphernalia, motors, crime scene tape, test tubes, skulls and anatomical models. How about a few eyeball candles, displayed with a sign that says, "These eyes just melt for you"? More serious science stuff (depending on what you use it for, of course) includes human skulls, microscopes and telescopes. One warning: Some of the cheap, cheap items come from auctions, liquidations and close-outs, so don't assume that you're getting quality.

Insider Tips

Save Time

Aisles are illogically numbered (just for fun, one sales clerk says), so ask for help finding what you want.

Know Before You Go

There are plenty of items under $1, but real science stuff gets more expensive, such as microscopes for $600 and telescopes for more than $1,000.

The Extras

Take advantage of the ongoing Bakers' Dozen Deal: Buy 12 of any one item and get the 13th free.
