Casual neighborhood coffee house, alternative to Starbuck's across the street. Coffee is fair-trade so you can feel better about drinking it, and the quality is good. However, the food selection is lacking--I stopped by on my way home from work and found the display case near barren, except for a couple of wrapped ordinary-looking sandwiches, and a couple muffins and bagels that seemed to be breakfast leftovers. If you want a drink other than coffee, there isn't much to choose from, either. But if you want a leisurely cup and to hang out without being bothered, this is a tranquil spot. Free wiFi access and outdoor patio seating available. PROS: Quiet neighborhood spot, excellent coffee CONS: Non-coffee selections and food limited

Update on Cafe Express in Southeast Evanston: Since the new owners, John and Brian have taken over, this place has had a major gut rehab in terms of the service, attitude, product quality and overall atmosphere! My wife and I experienced the "old" Cafe Express, and unfortunately had to agree with some of the other reviewer's disparaging comments. The "new" Cafe Express is super family friendly, but frequented by plently of childless couples and individuals (so it's a good balance between the two). Brian and John infuse a long-awaited sense of small town, local community with their "happy to see you" smiles and uncanny ability to remember the smallest details of your life. They're wifi friendly, brew award-winning coffee and a great selection of roles, light sandwiches and juices. They're have life acoustic music this Saturday night, if that's any indicator of how this place has turned around.

I really try hard to support local businesses, especially when they get crowded out by corporate giants like Starbucks. That said, I can't justify Cafe Express South. The food is mediocre at best, the coffee is anything but special, the seats are uncomfortable (except outside), the staff's attitude ranges from lousy to downright ornery and there's no wireless internet access. Please, give me just one good reason to go and I'll be there!
