Mitchell's is the BEST. It still smells the same as it did 20 years ago when I went there on the way home from school at St. Joseph's in Homewood, and Ida with the scratchy voice, glasses and black curly hair would give my sisters & I broken candy sticks for free (FREE!), and water in the summer. I was so happy to see Mitchell's Ice Cream being sold at Edwardo's on my block now on the near north side. Mitchell's is one of those old-time places that never changes. It's perfect just the way it is, and you MUST try their chocolate chip ice cream--HOMEMADE. Everything else there is heaven, too. Now they have a location downtown, too, which I will be frequenting this summer. It's worth the walk.

This family-run establishment has been in business since the 1930's. When my parents married in the 60's, they lived on South Shore Drive in Chicago and Mitchell's was there. Later, when they moved to the South Suburbs to raise a family, Mitchell's arrived in Homewood! I can think of so many great celebrations we had there- after school plays and ballet recitals- it's truly an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. Best, they make it all themselves and the chocolates they sell, too! Try a fresh strawberry milkshake or plain peach ice cream when it is in season. The other reviewer is plain wrong- the place was always small and only expanded briefly. The ice cream is an EXCELLENT value for the quality ingredients. Go to Dairy Queen if you want cheap!

Pros: Fresh, Old-Fashioned, Handmade
