In Short – Live catches, gourmet foods and party platters keep devotees rushing back daily to this Lincoln Park fishmonger. Fresh staples include swordfish, sole, snapper, salmon, marlin, pike, claims, crab, lobster, scallops and shrimp, along with specialty items like sole, herring, sardines, sea urchins and orange roughy. All products can be cleaned and deboned to the customer's liking. Non-cooks also appreciate the dozens of prepared foods on hand such as Vietnamese bouillabaisse, Manhattan chowder and seafood gumbo.

Wow - the best seafood EVER!

While on a tux rental adventure, I passed by Dirk's and didn't hesitate to try some fresh fish that they were barbequing in front of the store. Talk about a great advertising idea! The fish was delicious so inherently on the way back through I couldn?t pass it by. What I found inside this small retail store off Clybourn was an excellent array of seafood with a store full of what seemed to be ?regulars.?
When it was my turn to order, I was seemingly treated like the new kid at school. Strange ordering experience aside, I received some of the best oysters and crab legs that I've ever had in Chicago! It's worth noting - just tonight - I had some of the second best oysters and crab legs in Chicago at Half Shell off Diversey.
The difference between these two places besides Dirk?s seafood tasting just slightly better? Price! Amazingly, the price at Dirk's was about ? more than at Half Shell - A RESTAURANT. I found this a little weird, but, I'll DEFINITELY be visiting Dirk's again to get some more excellent seafood!
- Pros: The best seafood in Chicago - I've lived here 5 years and have seafood regularly
- Cons: Sort of pricey and parking in the strip mall is an adventure because there's a Panera, Pier 1, Jamba Juice, Men's Warehouse, etc.

When you want the best...

For the best fish in town, Dirk's is the place. For the best meat, go to Paulina Market. Enough said.
Neither is cheap but the quality is unsurpassed - even by most restaurants in Chicago. If you want Jewel selection and prices, feel free to go there but I guarantee you're not getting the same thing. The only supermarket that can compare to Dirk's quality is Whole Foods but the prices are high there as well. You get what you pay for.
- Pros: Fresh fish, Top quality, Great sauces, etc.
- Cons: Expensive, Parking can be tough

Where's the Value?

I stopped by Dirk's last weekend. I found the selection very limited and predominant pricing in the $20 p/lb range. It would be nice to see a fish market dominated by a large selection at prices equal to supermarkets. Why make an additional stop?
