Good, but needs to improve customer relations – This restaurant is certainly a bit better than average. Several features are commendable: The decor (ambience) is subdued and does not distract from the food. The service, though a bit pretentious, is good and the personnel very attentive.

The food is good but three of the four in our party found the main courses a trifle heavy and missing a few vegetables. Soups were superb and desserts excellent.

The person presenting the menus failed to inform us that the "Special Menu" advertised on the web site for Wednesday evening was listed separately although none of us deduced after reading (and rereading) the site. We were not offered this limited, but very adequate menu and all thought that the responsiblity for doing this belongs to the staff, not the customer. The bill surprised us and in response to our comment, the server showed us th "Special Menu". This should have be done when we were seated and presented all menus.

Therefore, my rating reflects the experience.

Tallgrass not worth the trip – There several times and previously impressed -- not this time.

Greeted at the door by a strawberry blond woman who said, "Welcome to Tallgrass and just for future reference, no jeans." I thought a jacket and smart jeans wouldn't be too outrageous. I didn't expect to start my evening that way; website doesn't mention dress code.

Menu/specials offer promise, but food was disappointing. They brought bread baked there and an amuse of salmon mousse which was tasty. Bread lacked salt negating any value of it being baked there. The lobster bisque had skin on top. The reduction was rich, but texture really put us off.

My wife had the Avocado, Parmesan Egg,.. I had a variety of seafood bites, lasagna of pasta and fish mousse, a parmesan egg, prawn tostada, gnocchi and a crab cake. The avocado was tasteless, egg too salty and the ricotta lacked flavor. Lasagna had bland layers of grainy mousse, egg too salty and grainy. The prawn and chorizo-like meat below were tough. I gave my gnocchi to my wife; bland. The crab cake was nice but herbs in the sauce were heavy handed.

I ordered the 2006 “Clos du Mont-Olivet” The server brought 2008 without a word. While Rhones won't vary much at this level I pointed out the wrong year. The sommelier said they were out. I asked for Cote Rotie; out of that. They're discontinuing Rhone as people liked California Cabs and big Bordeaux. He suggested 2008 was similar and wouldn't sell us "crap." I settled, but a good Coudoulet Beaucastel is fragrant and lush -- compared to this anemic Rhone.

The Tallgrass Beef Trio. Meat was unseasoned. The strip served on a variation on Pommes de Terre Anna and the short rib similarly on layered carrots; the filet was on mashed. Again, meat was unseasoned, the filet was cool and flaccid-- the short rib was tough without any jus.

My wife opted for the special "surf and turf" -- a filet with langoustines and a dollop of mushy peas. The langoustine was mushy; possibly overcooked or old. Filet was cooked properly, but cool and under seasoned. The peas were forgettable.

I was going to cancel the Assortment of Cheeses with Condiments but my wife was still hungry passing on most of her dinner. The cheese was the best part of the meal, although the 'condiments' were three grapes and two rock hard rounds of toast.

A disappointing meal for that price (over $300 with tip). The food was pretentious, and flavor took a back seat to presentation. I'm awestruck by some of the food being produced by chefs like Marc Orfaly and David Bouley, Tallgrass isn't in the same league and could do with competition to raise the bar. Won't be going back...

Beautiful, Absolutely Beautiful – I've eaten at TallGrass restaurant twice, both times while I was in training at culinary school. I have found it to be one of the most wonderful experiences in life. I ring a bell and wait for an answer with a certain anticipation that soon, I will only have the best of the best. When the door is answered I am led down and up stairs to a small room surrounded with mirrors, nothing like a carnival, but something much more sincere. The server comes to the table and I don't remember anything about that first experience, except of how wonderful the person standing before of me is. You choose how many courses and stare at the menu for a while. Everything sounds good...`can i have one of everything please?` is all you can think. You finally choose what to eat, and order your wine based on the server's opinion. What comes out next is perfect; perfect in every way, shape and form. It remains this way for the next few courses, depending, of course on how many you choose. After all this, the print on the bill seems like someone must have forgotten to put something, anything, on it. I thank the chef, and happily think on my way home, one day i hope to be as great as the people who just served me one of the best meals of my life.

Brilliant- in the true sense of the word. – I'll make this short, because no words can describe the wondrous dining experience you'll experience at Tallgrass.

I was floored by their exceptional level of cuisine..the textures, the aromas, the sauces, the pairings... just brilliant.

The best food in the suburbs... and possibly all of chicago....period.

Tallgrass- a carnival of earthly delights! – Simply Outstanding... It was our first time at this fine establishment, which provided a mouth-watering symphony of flavors for us on Mother's Day. One of us got the four course meal, and the other two the five course meal. They don't serve anything mediocre at this establishment.. everything is either great or extraordinary...a rare find in the restaurant market. Everything we tried was unique and held us captivated for the two radiant hours spent there. Tallgrass instantly became one of my favorite restaurants in the suburbs, along with Courtright's, Salbute (well, they're out of business), Vie, and Sunflower Bistro. Tallgrass is brilliant.

A Diamond in the Rough – Tallgrass is a diamond in the rough. The innocuous exterior belies the wonderful dining experience hiding inside. The staff was helpful yet unobtrusive, allowing time for conversation and digestion. However, it was the food that took center stage.

With a selection of three courses or more, it was easy to sample different tastes.

My favorite part of the appetizer sampler was an eggshell filled with a creamy delight that both pleased the eye and the palate. I chose pork tenderloin for my main course along with a spinach salad served with pears and walnuts. It was the best. From the dessert sampler, (enough for two) I loved the rum cake, but also enjoyed the chocolate and lace cookies served with coffee.

It was a higher priced restaurant for this neck of the woods, but certainly appropriate for the quality of the dining experience. I can't wait to return.

Creative, contemporary fare presented in a quaint, sedate setting in historic downtown Lockport. – In Short
The tiny, sedate Victorian dining room is frequented by mature couples and groups celebrating special occasions. Favorites on the changing contemporary menu include potato-crusted veal sweetbreads with shiitake mushrooms, crisp duck confit with wheat noodles, pan-roasted halibut with zucchini scales, and vegetarian options like potato gnocchi with basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese and lemon butter. For dessert, there's Belgian dark chocolate souffle or a raspberry ice cream soda with cookies.

Very nice!! – Expect to drop some bucks at this hidden-away gem, but in return expect to be thrilled and to return! Tallgrass is in a wonderful old building in downtown Lockport and has a great old country feel.

The food, which has French accent, is superb. There will be a wait before the food comes out, as it is all cooked to order, but this allows for a great evening of conversation, drinking wines, and striking up interesting conversations with the most agreeable staff. I've eaten here 5 times in the past 2 years, and can't say enough good things about the creativity of the chefs, the freshness of the preparations, the dynamite deserts, the wine list (and wine knowledge of the staff), and the ambience.
