Editorial Review for Uptown Bikes – by Colin Murphy

The Scene
On this gritty stretch of Broadway, the rickshaw on the sidewalk is bound to grab your attention. It serves as the shop's sign, tethered to a few favorites from the considerable stock of used bikes for sale. Inside the feeling is happily anarchic, with the floor mostly dedicated to repairs. Mechanical knowledge is considerable, though with workstands, tools, and friendly people on both sides of the counter, it's often unclear where customers end and employees begin.

The Goods
Any given day might find tandems, old 3-speeds, fixed-gears, and a variety of utilitarian rides culled from thrift stores, garage sales, and a messenger-driven trade-in business; few top $200. Solid, affordable new bikes by Fuji and Van Dessel line the ceiling and windows, and new and used parts, wheels, bags and carriers, and accessories cover the walls. You'll also find trailers and kid-carriers, tools, and assorted safety gear. Clothing is one spot where the selection falters.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Before you get to the register, count your cash, because they don't accept plastic no matter the affiliation, and checks aren't welcome either. If you do make this common mistake, there's an ATM at the El stop across the street.

The Extras

Frankenbikers and restorationists can search components in as close to a bicycle salvage yard as they'll ever find. Parts are neatly categorized in boxes. If you don't see the right size or threading, ask, because chances are they'll find it.
