The Scene
There's a sedate feel to this beautiful stone building that's set into a wooded hill in Willow Springs. A wall of windows offers a panoramic view of the countryside; diners can watch for deer. Suburbanites come for serious, but relaxed, dining amid upscale decor of wood and hunter-green florals. Service is polished, with a few minor misses.

The Food
Jonathan Harootunian (ex-Vivere) maintains a high standard with his seasonal, contemporary American cuisine. Dishes have intriguing flavor combinations in beautiful balance. Pillows of gnocchi mingle with shaved artichokes and tangy pecorino cheese. Freeform ravioli layers two thin sheets of pasta around chunks of juicy lobster and wild mushrooms, bathed in sumptuous lobster sauce with slivers of black truffle. Pan-seared diver scallops are heartily plated with a medley of braised short ribs, celery, toothy white beans and more black truffles. For dessert, try the banana trio--cold soup, creme brulee and sorbet.

My boss recommended my husband and I come here for our anniversary. Our first thought when we saw it was dissapointed because the first thing you see is the bar with the TV so we said, a Sportbar? Well we go in and of course that was just a "waiting" area. We go in and I thought it was a nice place with a great view but my husband was dissapointed. He didn't like the ambiance and he said the place looked like for older people. The carpet and seat covers aren't as "retro" as the new restaurants (they do look old) but once we got the food (we ordered the 4 course meal) everything changed. The food was superb and the staff was very nice and the price although it is pricey it's not as bad as other places we've been. So I will say our first impression wasn't the best but we did leave satisfied.

This is one of the finest restaurants in the region. I'd eat here before Trotter's, Tru, or Ambria for several reasons. First, the menu is amazing and prepared to perfection. Second, it is considerably less expensive (but not cheap!!) than the others. Third, the wait staff is great and the sommelier is brilliant. Finally, the ambience, esp. if you sit by the windows with a view of the tree-covered hill, is very romantic. The entrees and the degustation menu are wonderfully prepared. With wine, the degustation is actually a damn good deal, and much more affordable that one might suspect. Oh, and the wine list is HUGE and not filled with rubbishy wines, but with a good range of expensive to more affordable wines. If you can wrangle a tour of their new wine cellar out of the manager, do it!
