Editorial Review for The Flame – by Jennifer Olvera

The Scene
Classy and candlelit with carved wood walls and walnut crown molding, this southwest-suburban institution recalls a time when dining out was a grand affair. Convivial servers navigate wheeled carts carrying oysters on the half shell and juicy steaks while waiting on a loyal crowd of mature diners.

The Food
A large assortment of steaks, from Chateaubriand and beef Wellington to tender filet of beef Bearnaise. Seafood selections are equally impressive: Plump shrimp rim glasses of piquant cocktail sauce, while crisp, potato-crusted mahi mahi is complemented by sweet-savory apricot chutney and mashed potatoes with rich bordelaise sauce. Steak Diane is elegantly dressed in mushroom-garlic red wine sauce, while spicy, sausage-stuffed mushrooms linger in a pool of parsley-flecked garlic butter. For dessert, a treat for all ages is the mini banana split with fresh fruit, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and piped whipped cream in a waffle bowl.

Know Before You Go

This place draws a serious crowd, even in the early evening--so be sure to reserve.

What to Drink

The wine list features vintages from Kendall-Jackson, Rutherford Hill and others, though icy martinis with hand-stuffed blue cheese olives are equally tempting.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I have been going here for the past year and just about once a week some times more. Never have I had a bad experience with food or wait staff. The dinning room is relaxing, elegant yet casual. The people who dine here are so friendly and the wait staff makes a point to ask your name and remember it, which always makes you feel welcome. My husband and I have tried every thing from the pasta to fish to steak it is all wonderful! If you like hamburgers OH MY THE BEST!!!!! Thick tender and the juice will run down your hand YUM. They have a house dressing which is very good and my husbands favorite and also the old fashion carriers with a variety of dressing at your table. There is live music every day except Sunday and Tuesday is open mike night which can be fun too. The bar area is large, has a light fare menue or you can ask for the full menu, with 2 TV's and is a great place to see a game. This is also a great place for lunch and the lunch menu is very affordable. Soups are great and there is always a nice variety of specialty salads. (Try the crab salad my husband had it last week and we could not believe how large the pieces of crab were in it. Must try: For romance you have to get the chateaubriand for two it is wonderfully presented on a large platter surounded with vegtables just incredible. Of course the hamburger, twice baked potato, freanch opnion soup, chicken scaloppine, chopped steak, filet, salmon, brie and fruit plate ok I could list the full menu here so I better stop. This place has it all!!! Great food, great staff and great entertainment. If your in the burbs it is a must eat at kind of place!!!

Pros: Friendly staff, great food, Live music

Cons: NONE

This is a genuinely great and classic place. The original was in Lincoln Park, and was the Gibson's of it's time. A happening place where celebs could be seen. The countryside location (just as old) keeps the quality and charm of the original. The food is incredible. You will never have a bad meal here. Everything's fresh and well-prepared. It is not as popular now, mostly regulars, seniors, and people that remember the original, however it still does great buisness and is a historic name in Chicago dining. I would take the Flame over Gibson's/Morton's ANY day.

Pros: Excellent food, Great live piano, classic feel

Cons: slow service (mainly, because of the lack, of food-runners)
