Editorial Review for Palmer Place – by Jennifer Olvera
In Short
This brick-walled space and adjacent two-tiered beer garden draws families early on, and a louder, younger crowd after 9pm. Tasteful beer mirrors and framed beer posters hint at the 300-plus beers served by pint, pitcher and bottle, from Bell's, Capital and Dogfish to Ommegang and Summit. Bar menu selections include bratwurst, beer-battered fish and chips, and a massive triple-cheese and mushroom burger.

Went to Palmer's at 1 pm on baseball's opening day 2008. The place has about 20 TV screens. I'm a baseball fan, so opening day is a big deal for me. On this day, all the TVs were turned to the Cubs station, but the Cubs game wasn't set to start for another 30 minutes. So I asked the waitress to turn on ESPN so I could watch another ballgame that was going on. The waitress went away, but ESPN was never turned on. So I asked a manager the same thing, but he looked confused and said the Cubs and Sox were starting their games in 30 minutes. I said I know, but I'd like to watch a ballgame now before I had to return to work. He went away but nothing happened. The waitress eventually walked past my table and asked how everything was. I said okay but that I'd like to get a ballgame on TV. She then became really snooty. Finally, when I was just about finished with my plate of nachos---which had to be the worst I've had in a restaurant, all soupy and with chips that were broken into little bits---one of the TVs was switched to ESPN. I guess I must've gotten on the wrong side of the waitress because she never came back to refill my cola. I also had to flag her down to get my check. When she came to my table, she tossed the bill at me, and when I gave her money to pay the bill, she gave me change without saying thank you. By the way, the bill was $17 for lousy nachos, a cup of soup, and a cola. I left no tip, which is the first time I've ever done that. But the waitress was rude, selfish, and arrogant, so she got what she deserved. (I didn't catch her name, but she was in her 20s, had glasses and brown hair, and was a bit overweight.) I've been to Palmer's plenty of times, but I don't think I'll go back, not after the way I was treated. You'd think I was putting them out for making a simple request. This place now rates a zero for me.
Pros: lots of TVs
Cons: rude waitress, horrible nachoes

The biergarten is a great place to have a beer, meet friends or just people watch during the summer months. The food service, whether appetizers or entrees, is so slow it boggles the mind. And this is constant, whether during the summer when the place is crawling with people, or during the winter with the place half empty. And this is for bar food. Its as if they have one George Foremen grill working since if you have a party over 5 people, the food may come out in shifts. Obviously, the profits are in the beer. Go for beer and leave the overcooked hamburgers on the grill.
Pros: Beer
Cons: Food Service
