Editorial Review for Broadway Supermarket – by Colin Murphy
The Scene
Anchoring a generic Uptown strip mall, this big market sells goods from all over East and Southeast Asia in the fluorescent supermarket
arrangement familiar to Americans. Incense from a small shrine near the registers suffuses the air, and most shoppers and staff are first-generation immigrants. On a given visit you might hear five different languages spoken. The language barrier can cause confusion at
times.
A World of Foods
This is the place to get supplied for authentic Asian cooking. Massive bags of rice are stacked next to bulk dried mushrooms and chilies. These give way to shelves of cleavers, chopsticks, and china, then to four aisles of noodles. Look for a soy sauce selection to rival the wine section in most supermarkets, numerous varieties of tofu, spicy kimchi, and all manner of pickled vegetables. Incense goes for astoundingly low
prices. The mammoth seafood department has fresh and preserved versions of everything from minnows to carp to whole squid and live crabs.

Insider Tips
Treat YourselfCheck out the sweets and snacks aisles for some insight into the global breadth of the concept of "treat." If a whole bag of, say, shrimp-honey-rice puffs is too much for you, try some of the interesting gums and candies in the checkout line.
Cheap and Tasty FuelWhen shopping leaves you famished, stop in next door at Dong Ky, where two people can get stuffed on tasty Vietnamese fare for under $10.

Don't shop here. They will tow your car if you leave the plaza, EVEN IF YOU SHOP AT THEIR STORE ($170). We left to get a sandwich for less than 10 minutes and our car was gone. We recommend you go to Tai Nam at 4925 N Broadway. Their parking policy is much more reasonable, and it is an excellent Vietnamese grocery store.
