Editorial Review for Catch 35 Seafood Restaurant – by J.P. Anderson

The Scene
Suits and business-casual types fill the camel-brown leather booths at Catch 35, where sky-high ceilings and a decor straight out of the '80s hearken back to the "greed is good" days of conspicuous consumption. It's comfortable for the corporate crowd, but not necessarily the kind of place you'd go for a romantic meal.

The Food
Catch 35's innovative seafood menu spices things up with a distinctly Asian flavor. Superb seared scallops are kissed with Szechwan glaze and hidden under a pile of colorful Asian veggies; Panang curry shrimp is served with a mound of fragrant rice, the grilled shrimp wielding a delicate heat just strong enough to make your taste buds do a double take. The more conventional crab cake with corn and black bean relish is excellent, too. Lobster fans can indulge in succulent grilled Australian Greenback lobster tail.

My wife, son and me ate at Catch 35 before a concert at the Chicago Theater, which is right around the corner. The restaurant is beautiful and flashy although the tables are set very close together. Its great for people watching and listening! The kitchen has a glass window all around which is both interesting and troubling at the same time. We ate early, about 6:00 to avoid the big rush later. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly and very helpful with our selections which was needed due to the expansive menu. Many wines are offered by the glass and proved to be a nice inexpensive way to try some different wines with our meal. We started with shrimp cocktail and the coconut shrimp. The shrimp cocktail was absolutely average with small shrimp lying dead and cold on a big plate. The coconut shrimp was outstanding with a delightful chutney like sauce. We had the crab bisque instead of salad. It really was not very good. It wasn't bad, just not good. It needed salt, pepper, crab and bisque. I don't know who prepared the soup, but he needs to be slapped with a mackerel. My wife had the scallops, my son the halibut and lump crab meat and I had the blackened grouper. The scallops were great as was the halibut, but my grouper was still flopping on the plate when it arrived and has to be sent back to be caught and cooked. Don't get me wrong, I love sashimi, just not part sashimi. The restaurant is flashy and the service is fast and attentive. Just be careful with your selections and poke it before you put in your mouth.

Pros: Great atmosphere and service

Cons: Inconsistent quality of food

As we just walk in.. I was already impressed. Large yet intimate dining. We arrived 45 min before closing.. You would think the wait staff would be cranky, ready to go home. Well, I think we received the best service. I usually try different foods when on vacation.. So I choose the Halibut, topped with crabmeat. My choice was on the money.. Sooo good. My husband, being the carnivore he is.. choose a NY strip steak, med rare with whipped potatoes. They have a signature dessert.. the Key Lime Pie.. Of course I decided to take a taste.. My husband had the baked apple pie.. Both were excellent. This is surely a great place to eat. In the heart of it all too...Enjoy!!
