Editorial Review for Trattoria No. 10 – by Elisa Kronish
The Scene
A cheerful trompe l'oeil mural fills the walls around an open stairway that leads down into the restaurant. Low ceilings, wood furnishings, textured cream walls and red-speckled tile floor create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Understated arches divide the large dining room into intimate spaces, and overall dim lighting is cleverly complemented by table spotlights.
The Food
The menu is divided the Italian way, with antipasti followed by pasta, then a course of meat and fish entrees. Start with tomato basil soup, tuna carpaccio, polenta or the simply delicious field greens sweetened with candied walnuts. Pasta dishes are filling on their own and include risotto with sauteed chicken, farfalle with duck confit, orrecchiette with homemade Italian sausage, and several ravioli dishes--try the butternut squash, farm-fresh and subtly sweet. Linguine is full of roasted eggplant and plum tomatoes, with a rich and flavorful finish of basil, capers and chunks of smoked mozzarella.

After the last 7 years of constantly battling the "noisiest" restaurants, at last we found a place to have an incredible meal but we could also hear each other speak! We have been to all of them, only to find ourselved screaming over each other. Not here! The environment is just decadent--quiet and beautifully decorated. The staff wasn't bothering us every 3 minutes. I would have given them 5 stars except that our waitress could have been a little nicer--introducing herself, explaining the specials etc. But if you've never visited Chicago and want a treat that won't cost you the 150 per plate fee--this is it! Even the people we entertained said "that was the best evening ever and also wanted to go back!" Oh--save room for dessert, the Profiteroles and the chocolate sampler was amazing!
