Editorial Review for N9NE Steakhouse (Nine) – by J.P. Anderson
The Scene
More than four years after opening its doors, Nine still draws Chicago's beautiful people by the roomful to its glam dining area and hip upstairs Ghost Bar. All glass, mirrors, brown suede and shiny silver, the cavernous, super-sleek space is centered around a granite champagne and caviar bar supported by pillars that shimmer like disco balls. Service flows smoothly.
The Food
The contemporary American fare is consistently excellent. The two cones appetizer is fabulous, one overflowing with tuna tartare, another with chunks of lobster and avocado. Rock shrimp are delightfully crispy, with a mellow tobiko aioli and a Vietnamese pepper sauce that's devilishly hot. Ahi tuna is perfectly pink inside; New York sirloin is charbroiled to perfection. Desserts--including dreamy profiteroles and luscious Valhrona chocolate cake--are all worth saving room for.

My dinner at N9NE was quite a different story. I was there last night, just in time for their new menu to be debuted! The restaurant was hoppin and the wait staff was very prompt and efficient, considering how busy it was! I started with the parma prosciutto appetizer which was very flavorful and was just right before my main course. For my entrée I had the veal chop which was perfectly cooked, tender and moist. This place is a hot spot for a reason – the food and service is always great and the décor is breathtaking. Accidents happen, big deal your girlfriends foot got stepped on. I sure wouldn’t let that ruin my night.
Pros: Awesome setting, decor, and food!!

My girlfriend and I were celebrating our 2 year anniversary and decided to try this place out since some other steak places we wanted were closed for the July 4th holiday. We were seated promptly and showed up 15 min earlier than our reservations, great! Then we got to our table. The tables are along a wall of benches and really close to one another. We didn't have any other couples next to us when we arrived, but with in 15 min there was another seated right next to us. We could literally reach out and touch them if we wanted. When the waiter took their order his butt was right in my face. Dinner came out. I got the fillet surf and turf and my girlfriend got just the fillet. Her's was undercooked and mine was not, so i just switched steaks with her. In hindsight I wish I would've sent it back to the kitchen, but I'm just not one of those people. Especially when you're paying $43 for a steak with NO SIDE DISHES, you'd expect it to come out midium rare if that's how you order it, not rare. My lobster tail was too salty as well. Now we're eating and the whole time the table next to us can hear our converstation and we can hear theirs (too close seating wise). We finally left and when I got up I saw my brand new Bannan Republic 93% cotton 7% poly black pants had tons of white lint all over them. While walking out the stupid waiter filling up someone else's water backed up with out looking and stepped on my girl friends foot (she was wearing saddles). Avoid this place, it's not romantic, the waiter seemed a little too cool for school, the seats are way TOO CLOSE together, and the prices don't reflect the quality. We're going to Gene and Gorgetti's next time (they were closed on holiday this time).
Pros: Fast service
Cons: Undercooked steak, salty lobster, mindless waitstaff
