What People Are Saying About La Sardine

Featured Review

Elisa Kronish

Contributor

The Scene – A sister bistro to the ever-popular Le Bouchon in Bucktown, La Sardine was hip long before this now-booming neighborhood was, and continues to thrive because of its great food and low prices. The atmosphere is so comfy that diners--trendy retirees and young professionals--linger for hours. Warm cherry-wood accents and brick walls complement vibrantly painted columns, while subdued lighting balances a noisy room. Service works as a polished team. – – The Food – Mismatched plates are a charming touch to a meal that begins with perfectly crusty French bread.…

Editor's Tips

Save Money:
On Mondays, all bottles of wine are half-price. And on Tuesdays, choose any appetizer, entree and dessert for $22.
Where to Sit:
A crammed room sometimes means bottlenecks of diners and servers, especially in the center aisle. Request a table in the front or along the side.
Know Before You Go:
Smoking is always allowed at the bar; there's also a smoking section every day except Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Are you kidding me? The reviewer who claimed something was wrong with his wife's food has a serious problem with, um, logic...

One, he was not sick.

Two, a restaurant is liable if she made a complaint, which she apparently did not, as it is still open... and furthermore, food contamination and/or any bacterial problem lasts more than one night of discomfort...

Three, everything else was good, and it was December, January... even in February everyone was getting the flu. I don't mean to be all "new" about it but call it a "season" or something.

Last, the mgmt. seems to have addressed the problem in the same way a credit card is declined... i.e. we will look into our system, but maybe you are just, um, short.. gosh..

Either way, maybe she just needed a few minutes away from you... and/or you libido.

I've faked worse, so don't blame the restaurant.

  • Pros: Been there, love it!
  • Cons: hm.

Good food. Weird B-tender.

by rmdo at Citysearch

Soup was great. Steak was perfectly done. The sauce was ok. Dessert was ok. Wine was great. Coffee was good. Bartender would not break my twenty so that I could leave a few dollars in the coat-check box...go figure...I'll probably go back soon but I'll just avoid the weird bartender.

  • Pros: Good food. Great table service.
  • Cons: The bartender must have been having a bad day...

Great food. Until my wife got sick and threw up all night long...

by dustingellman at Citysearch

I love Le Bouchon (La Sardine's sister restauant) and have dined there for many years. My wife and I dined at La Sardine on Tuesday evening, December 11.

We had the following: Escargot, pea soup, grilled steak with house butter, grilled pike, Grand Marnier souffle, and apple tart.

We enjoyed our meal, and the service was excellent. However, within an hour, my wife felt ill to her stomach. She spent the majority of the evening throwing up.

Restaurant owner's response below:

I am so sorry that your wife became ill after dining at La Sardine. We

have 3 certified sanitation managers on staff and they were all present

on Tuesday. I want to stress that we are very careful about safe food

handling. While I received no other letters or calls, I am unsure of

which item was the culprit. I do appreciate your letter and I have

informed the chef.

  • Pros: awesome food, great service, good ambiance, romantic
  • Cons: my wife became ill nearly immediately

Great rustic french cuisine

by colinsilveira at Citysearch

La Sardine serves some of the best French food in Chicago. The wine list is awesome and the service is exceptional. I had the bouillabaise which was delicious and had very fresh seafood. It went well with the bread and tasted just like you would be sitting near the Seine in Paris and having dinner. The ambience was great and it is definitely worth a second visit.
