Since its 1952 debut in Memphis, Tenn., Holiday Inn has become one of the most recognized hotel brands in the world. Kids rule here: Children age 19 and younger stay for free when sharing a parent's room and as many as four children per family (age 12 or younger) eat for free at hotel restaurants. Other amenities include 24-hour business services, an in-room coffeemaker, iron, hair dryer, room service, a swimming pool and a fitness center.

Nice surprise from one year ago.. Week of Oct. 5, 2008 . . .

We stayed at this location one year ago when it was still the City Center. Since then, the

Doubletree group has made some tasteful, fantastic improvments . The price is still

reasonable and the rooms and furnishings can rival many hotels in the area costing 100%

more. The heating and cooling controls for these rooms work nicely, a big hassle in several,

upscale hotels in Chicago. The entire staff is courteous and the people at the concierge desk

gave us great recommendations and reservations ( Thank you, gentlemen ! ).

If you want to go to the bar, it currently is rather makeshift, but we were told this is being

changed in the near future. The one surprise was a lack of a hair dryer in the bathroom.

I've become so accustom to this becoming the "norm", even in lesser hotels, that I didn't

take one with me. However, a call to the desk had a dryer to my room in less than five

minutes. Everything about this Doubletree on Ohio Street is well on the plus side.

The former Chicago City Centre Hotel & Sports Club underwent a $21 million facelift with 500 redesigned rooms, complete with a spiffy lobby, sundeck, outdoor pool and ergonomically sound workstations called "Smart Desks." Built for conventioneers, the hotel, which is close to Navy Pier and the Magnificent Mile, sports 17,000 square feet of meeting space with 13 conference rooms equipped with wireless and high-speed access. Extra touches like access to the adjoining Lakeshore Athletic Club, a poolside snack bar and family-friendly movies--watchable by the pool during the summer--remind guests to relax during their stay.
