In Short – One of the few wooden buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire, this pub is festooned with Chicago-themed bric-a-brac, like antique signs, posters and political buttons. Specialties include generously sized sandwiches, salads and pasta dishes. Starter favorites include ample crab cakes served with piquant remoulade; the Caesar is a hit with salad lovers. Among entrees, meat-only chili is served with sides of onions, jalapenos and kidney beans, and burgers come with well-seasoned crinkle-cut fries.
Great for solo diners.

If you work anywhere in or near River North, the Green Door is a must do for lunch. Whether dining alone at the bar or with a group, Green Door accommodates. I have always been a solo diner, and I sit at the bar. My favorite things there are the quesadillas (made with buffalo sauce inside...mmmm), the burger (it's what they're famous for), the buffalo chicken sandwich, the pizza bread, and my own version of the pizza bread made with avocado and swiss only. The bloody mary's are the best in town (made with a splash of guinness for body).
Barkeeps are polite and friendly. Service is on key. I am definitely a repeat customer.
- Pros: Great food. Great service.
- Cons: lunch hour isn't long enough.
old chicago charm and a damn good burger

The interior of the Green Door Tavern on Orleans is so visually entertaining that, as a single woman, I never felt edgy or bored sitting alone at the bar because there was so much for me to look at. The after work crowd is an odd mix of suits
(many in the insurance business for some reason) and folks from the surrounding River North art gallery scene. The burgers in this old Chicago nook are terrific and I've never run in to bad service...disaffected occasionally, but never bad.
