Editorial Review for Bootleggers – by Karla Zimmerman

The Scene
Bootleggers is ready to party: Neon beer signs and animal heads--often sporting Mardi Gras beads--pop out from pine-green walls. There's a hodgepodge of sturdy, standard-issue Formica tables and plastic-topped metallic stools. The front and back of the long space hold fully-stocked bars; the middle hosts the DJ booth, disco-ball-enhanced dance floor and his-and-her "put them anywhere" tattoo dispensers.

The Draw
Open late every night and flaunting a devil-may-care attitude, this bar (like many of its neighbors on this Gold Coast stretch) is for nubile 20-somethings who like to stay out late drinking, dancing and hitting on each other. Patrons can--and do--boogie on the bar, inspired by DJs who blast disco and pop requests from 8pm onward. Miller Lite, Stella Artois and a few other beers are on tap, plus bottles. Shot glasses line up like soldiers in the bar's center, presumably for the schnapps and vodkas standing behind.

Insider Tips

When to Go

Tuesday is always Mardi Gras night, when balloons trailing colored ribbons hang from the ceiling and plastic bead necklaces festoon the tables. Thursdays feature body painting, provided the crowd is willing (and it often is).

Parking

Valet service is available Thursday through Sunday, or try the pay lot on Elm Street or garage on Dearborn Street.
