A neon-lit trip back to the Eisenhower era comes with burgers, shakes and fries..
In Short
Vintage Coca-Cola ads and posters of Life magazine covers succinctly summon up the 1950s, as do this diner's mini-jukeboxes, red vinyl counter stools and sock-hopping staff. Besides fast food staples like hot dogs, cheeseburgers, tuna melts and onion rings, options like the Streamliner (a grilled veggie patty) acknowledge more modern dietary concerns. Even better for kids, sandwiches come wrapped in paper jackets and nearly everything is served on paper plates. No spills. No breaks. No tears.
The best and worst thing about Johnny Rockets: It's open..

I stopped by this joint after a night at the bars to get some decent food. Because I was so hungry, I was ecstatic to see an open diner in this neighborhood. The feeling of seeing an open place to eat was the best part about my experience. The worst part about my experience was everything after I walked through the front door. The service was slow and unorganized, the interior looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week, and the food was overpriced and tasted like... well... nothing. Taking someone's old, half-eaten McDonald's out of a garbage can would have been more satisfying. Covered with snow. And feces.
They could charge a nickel for each item on the menu and you would still leave feeling cheated out of your money. The only way I can possibly recommend going to Johnny Rockets is if you are so beyond drunk that you will eventually heave up everything eaten there that night, and not remember going.
Great food, great service, fun tradition.. I took my boys downtown on the train on Xmas break to show them downtown for the first time last year. They kids were 9 & 10. They had never been to a '50's diner setting. The wait staff was great, fun, & friendly. It was quite busy. The kids were kept busy by the waiter with fun little things that I would never have thought my kids would get into. Wearing the tent hat, drawing things with crayons, drawing a smiley face with ketchup, etc. Great waiter, great service. They brought the fries first, which kept all happy. Lots of wonderful food. We had a wonderful experience. The boys immediately called Dad, who was at work to rave about the place. They told him they couldn't wait to bring him some day. Well, this year, Dad is joining us for our new tradition & it includes, if not revolves around Johnny Rockets. The boys talk about it all the time. They can't wait to go. So, have fun & enjoy!
Blast off to good taste. After visiting the Northbrook Court Shopping center one day, I realized I had done something I hadn't done in quite awhile; had a delicious old school burger. I was sarcastic on how this place could have so much attention judging by all the people waiting. It looked like most burger sit down joints; it comprised of an classic diner setting with menus taking the same note. Yet, my tastebuds were satisified by the seasoned fries, onion rings and the one of a kind bacon burger with a milkshake. Enough said.
Retro. A classic style eatery with incredible burgers and assorted other short order choices.
Good food. The food and service were both very good, the shakes are excellent. Price was inexpensive. Very good burgers.
Skip It. I live right near this place and always said that my next hangover was going to be cured by Johhy Rockets fries and a burger. Well, I finally gave it a try and was extrememly dissapointed. The service could not have been more awful. We recieved our french fries and burgers and it took us asking a waitress 4 times to get a a glass of water. My burger was overcooked, and dry. The fries and milkshake was OK but not worth the aggravating time to get our check and food. Skip this place if you can. Better food and service elsewhere.
