Editorial Review for WBEZ (91.5 FM) – by Chris Barsanti
The Station
On the one hand, public radio stations everywhere are pretty much the same. But it's in the spaces between the NPR standards like "All Things Considered" and "Fresh Air" that WBEZ (91.5 FM) earns its reputation. The staff gives an in-depth, Chicago spin to the morning news, and locally produced weekly morning show "848" is packed with an engrossing, magazine-like mix of topics.
What Do They Play?
Jazz, jazz, jazz Monday through Friday from 8pm until well past midnight. Weekend nights mix it up a little more with shows like Friday night's "Afropop Worldwide" and Sunday morning's "Blues Before Sunrise."
More Than Music
As serious as the news programs are, WBEZ has a big slate of humor programs ranging from "Car Talk" to "A Prairie Home Companion."

I came to Chicago recently as an avowed NPR junkie, having honed my listening skills growing up in a very public radio friendly town like Seattle. I've been surprised at how poorly Chicago's WBEZ operates... administratively as well as its program schedule. My sister has endured an ongoing drama of making donations without receiving promised gifts. Both of us endure a ridiculous number of pledge drives, and now we're about to see an overhauled program schedule that removes some of its best programs (KCRW's To The Point and *all* of the Jazz programming) to spend each weekday afternoon listening to verbatim repeats of its morning programs! Is this how you save money? Kudos for 848 and World View, but who the heck is running this incompetent ship? I've resorted to online streams of KCRW, New York Public Radio and Seattle's KUOW to avoid WBEZ's paltry lineup. Every time you ask for more money while delivering an unsound product further alienates your audience. A great city like Chicago deserves better!
Pros: Some Good Local and National Programs
Cons: Poor Subscriber Relations, Arrogant Management, Bad Programming Schedule

Intellegent, entertaining programming every day--this is where I get my news and where I get a laugh. Whether I'm pulled into a story from Selected Shorts, giggling along with Car Talk or listening to community issues, I feel it's time well spent.
