Editorial Review for Tavern on Rush – by J.P. Anderson

The Scene
Thirty-something singles eye each other over martinis at the bar of this classy Gold Coast restaurant, whose country-club decor is all dark wood, leather accents and lazily twirling ceiling fans. Upstairs, the stately dining room is a more subdued, family-friendly scene, with tall, spacious booths, a bustling open kitchen and no-nonsense servers who could recite the menu backwards if asked.

The Food
The classic American menu scores with upscale steak and seafood plates. Favorite starters include artichoke and crab dip and griddled crab cakes, plus a regal fresh seafood platter piled with jumbo shrimp, crab claws, a mound of lump crabmeat and a few morsels of seared tuna with ginger. Steaks (all prime cuts and charcoal-grilled) are impeccable: Servers recommend the bone-in fillet, but the petite New York strip is more than enough meat for most appetites, perfectly cooked and ringed with a juicy layer of fat.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

During the warmer months, the Tavern's sidewalk patio is the ultimate spot for Rush Street people-watching.

What to Drink

The list of wines by the glass is fairly limited, so go for a martini--they're big enough to swim in.

Call Ahead

Due to the restaurant's popularity, it's best to call ahead and make a reservation, especially during summer when the outdoor patio is open.

See and be seen at this Rush location. I made the mistake of coming here to have steak w/ my sister. The food was blasphemously bland. I couldn't resist adding salt to my side dishes and even worcestershire sauce to my steak to make the food more palatable. I could imagine a fun singles or even after work scene but do not come here for the food. Maybe the drinks since there is a big bar in the middle. Ambience is fine otherwise. Saves itself w/ 3 stars!

Pros: Rush street = people watching

Cons: The steaks, the service is slooooooow

This place seems to be designed for suburbanites seeking the hope of downtown upscale. The food falls short of average, the bartenders are rude and un-attentive, and the management is creepy. As with all other Stefani restaurants, this one caters to the tourists and suburbanites. The valet parking staff keep the upscale cars in front to give the impression of an upscale environment, but since I live n the neighborhood, I'm here to tell you it's the same people each week showing off their cars. Cheesy older men leer at scantily clad women from Schaumberg. Pass this place by.

Pros: Outdoor seating

Cons: Everything else
